Has anyone ever used a disc behind their atv to make a food plot? My hunting buddy just acquired 100 acres of hunting land and we are in the planning stages of food plots for this fall. Are the atv disc heavy enough to actually break up the ground or does the ground need to be disced up by a big tractor first? Any and all inputs will be welcomed. Thanks

you will probably need to get a larger disc to break the ground...once its broken once the atv disc should be fine from there on out...I just found a local guy to come out and use a larger disc to get the ground started in several areas and went from there...something that will help a lot is to get rid of all the grass in the area you want to disc..spray it with round up and scrape it....Im not sure about east texas and the sandy soil there but that was my experience in black dirt....

if you got the option of a larger tractor or disc it would help out greatly. I've added weight to my little plow it works great. The first time you plow, the ground is pretty hard.

in east tx, I've only found a handful of places they would scratch the ground.

Have a King Kutter that works pretty good on TX Panhandle Dirt. Fellow lease memeber has another model that he picked up from BP that works well and is a little heavier and a lot more expensive.

If I have very sandy soil, will one of those King Kutter things work without using heavy equipment first?

Also thinking about going that route.

I think you'll be disappointed in using an ATV or the size(weight) disc that you can pull with it. I believe I would find something like an old Ford 8N tractor and a 5 or 6 ft disc. Even then, you might have to disc twice.

i welded some pipe on my atv pull behind so i could add weight and mine works great. But it does help to have it turned over the first time.

I have an ATV disc and I used it a couple of times. It is a pretty heavy one. It did an OK job after a lot of work, but in my area I did much better by hiring a fellow with a tractor and having him do my food plots. It works better for me that way.

I used an older one last year to make a plot. it was my first time to use one. The disk had a plate on top so you could add some weight. I put 2 engine headers on it and worked great. Bad part of it was that its hard on your ATV. And with a tractor you can lift the disk up to make your turns, but cant with ATV. Without realizing it before I started, i had to go way outside my designated plot boundaries just to turn, tearing up way more than I anticipated. but everythign grew back and thicker. I went over my plot 4-5 times. I did this in east texas before all they rain started so the ground was still dry. it was hard, but i got it done. If you do it now while the ground is still semi wet, it should work great. Good luck

Have tractor but,

Playing with the 4-wheeler is fun too.
Multi-mount winch bracket has proven very versitle.

This works for 4-wheeler or tractor.

i bought a three point hitch disc and made a few changes. pull it with a 450 honda no problems, have to make two passes in west texas hard dirt. if you go over it too much you will bury the 4x4

i think if you killed and clean off all vegetation and the ground was bare the atv plow will work best a couple days after a good rain.

most food plot mixes or seed only require about 1/2" or less of soil cover. so you don't really have to plow that deep...

I've got a king kutter and I use it quite a bit in Cherokee County. It's perfect for food plots in tight places. It will go wherever your 4-wheeler will go. I put quite a bit of extra weight on mine and have no problem with breaking the sandy/clay ground up. I would recommend a tractor for pipelines as the KK will take to long.

I know a guy that does his discing with a 4x4 ford bronco but any 4x4 would have more power than an atv. You might have to extend or modify the plows hitch to be able to turn...

I dont like the idea this should tear up transmisions and rear ends in a hurry. If you do use one I would not run it to long at a time

we bought one several years ago. It worked to some extent, but it was a big exercise in frustration if you want more than just 1 or 2 small plots. BUT, if that's all the money you have and you can't hire someone else to disc the plots up for you, it will work if you understand that it is slow going and hard on the ATV

I didnt say you could use a 24 foot disc plow but most pickups will tow 7 or 8 thousand pounds. whats the difference in a disc plow and a trailer ?

a trailer has wheels your pulling part of the earth. Rooted weeds, plants, rocks, mud,. obviously you have not farmed much. Trucks and Atv are not made for this. If the implament digs then it will break your ride. If it dosnt break your ride your probably not turning enough ground.

The Okie has it right. Not much sense using a pickup or 4 wheeler for farming. You can buy an old Ford 8N for less than $2,000 and a 5 or 6 ft disc for $400 to $500. You can't repair a 4 wheeler for that price and they are expensive to buy or replace.

Call the manufacturer of the 4 wheeler and ask their thoughts.
