Are you allowed to use a rifle during spring turkey season? I thought it was shotgun only but I could be mistaken. Thanks

Yes It depends on the county you are hunting in, Rifle hunting for turkeys is LEGAL but you must use center fire cartridges ONLY!

It's been a while since I checked but I don't remember anything about centerfire... where I hunt rifles are legal, not very sporting but legal.

Rifles not legal in e.tx for eastern birds, shotgun only.

Not trying to start something here, but using a rifle would take all the fun out of it. The best part about turkey hunting is hearing the bird gobble and trying to outwit that longbeard and coax him into shotgun range. It's not all about the kill. Rifles are illegal in LA., but if it's legal where you are and you want to use a rifle, that's your choice. As for me, even if it were legal, I still wouldn't use one.

I don't think you have hunted west Texas where the only cover is pasture grass that is less than a foot tall and nothing else in sight for over 1/4 mile. If you have you might have a different opinion.

I have hunted turkeys all over Texas and Oklahoma and still prefer calls and a shotgun to a rifle. If you want to use a rifle or even a corn feeder thats your choice and I am fine with that.

Long distance (150-200 yd) W/ .22 Hornet is the only way that I have hunted turkey so far.

i like pulling them up close and shootin them in the face, but when it gets down to last day or so and the call shy birds are way out, then its time to pick them off carnival style. but we have a huge population of birds on our place and they give the deer a good run for feed rights at the feeders.... rifle 2cents

I like calling them and having them come in close but sometimes it just doesn't work that way so they get a 17 hmr or 204 to the head!

It took me a couple of birds to learn not to body shoot them, head shots are the only real way to go but in a pinch shoot um in the butt.
We used to have a guy that shot them there all the time if you asked him where he hit the bird he'd say, "I shot him in the head." but when you saw the turkey it was shot in the butt and Larry would say "Well... he had his head up his AZZ!"

I miss ole Larry!

I totally agree with all of yall. I use a shotgun as well. I was having a debate with one of my buddies who thought it was legal to shoot a rifle. Neither of us use a rifle but were just curious.

It depends on what county you are in, which i'm in denton county, and its legal to use a rifle here.

There is nothing better than a bird 20 yds away from you struttin his stuff!

Rimfire, centerfire, shotgun, archery equipment or muzzleloader for Rio Grande turkeys.

Easterns are by shotgun or archery equipment only, no baiting and must be checked in within 24 hours from time of kill at a designated check station.

I have shot with rifles and shotguns but the real rush is when you call them in and take'em by shotgun.

I'll be using a .270 WSM

The beauty of the Second Ammendment is it won't be needed until they try and take it.
