First time poster here in thf im normally on tff, dont hold that against me lol. I havent hunted in probably 20 years but grew up north and that all i used to do.
Anyway i have a question on coyotes. My sister in law lives outside of Dallas in the country and has a bad problem with coyotes DAILY after her chickens, and constantly having to buy more. They are getting very brave, not even their huge pit scares them anymore and you can be on their porch and they will come to the fence of the chickens that is only 30ft away from the porch. Question is im taking it from what im reading is that you have to have a license even thou its private land, and really nothing you can do with them after you shoot them? Growing up we used to sell the fur but what ive saw it isnt worth anything anymore thanks to the fur activist. Also is their a season on them? Just trying to find a way to get rid of them for her and if shooting them is the only way then guess ill go buy a license (do you get just a normal hunting license for them?) and get a rifle and set up a blind and sit and wait for them. Any suggestions would be appreciated since they are starting to scare her since they are always around and she has lived there for over 30 years now and never had this many problems with them before. Also can you spotlight them? Only asking cause i dont know
Thanks
Mark

I assume you need a license, not sure.

you can hunt them year-round, and at night with a light.

Now's the time to do it, its breeding season.

I would suggest caging up a chicken a safe distance from the house, and use that as your lure.

a license is only around 30 bucks, buy one.. hunt them year round, at night with spotlight with almost anything you want. best way to hunt them is at light with a distress call with spotlight, no blind needed
best to use red lense spotlight

What do you do when you shoot one? JUst bury it or what? Thanks for the tips, she has a shotgun and a rifle but she always sees them too late and when she comes out the door they go behind the barn next to the chicken coop and disappear lol or get out of range and wait for her to go back inside then they come back, so i think a blind of some sort or a hiding place would be best for them. First light would probably be better but they show up thru out the day there lol i think cause its a constant food source for them. They probably ate 50 chickens in the last cpl months from her even thou they lock the door to the coop at night but open it in the morning they come during the day after she opens the door and drags them under the fence, or when the guinnies fly out they are there waiting for them.

you can camo out and set up to call them. If they are used to chasing the chickens, shouldn't be hard to call them until they get wise. If you don't want the pelts you can drag them away from the house and feed the buzzards.

If you own the property you don't need to buy a lic, but you need to own 10 acres or more to legally discharge a firearm on private prop in a subdivision or unincorporated area. If you use a light get a red lens for it.

Sister in law owns the property but its not 10 acres only 2 but all around her is either trees or fields and the others round her which isnt very close at all dont care but to get rid of them also. The side they come up on no other house they have their own road to get to their house, they had to make and maintain lol. Where the coyotes come up on nothing there but trees and fields about as far as you can see, but i would use a small caliber rifle or possibly shotgun to make sure the round doesnt go too far. I know a 22 can travel a long ways but where i could set up and where the coyotes come up at is a hill and shes on the downward slope of it. And of course shooting away from the house the rest has a fence around it.
If shes ready for me to come out there then ill just buy a license to be on the safe side and be done with it

cloest neighbor is in the opposite direction of where the coyotes come up from and they are 300 yards away then probably a mile if not more across the field but like i said its a downward slope by her house so looking at it the bullet would hit the ground before traveling very far. May just try some slugs in a 12g since she gets within 30ft of them. And they come in packs so if i could get in the barn next to the coupe i may be able to take a cpl out before they got out of range if not more.

if they are offering that close of a shot, i would just shoot em in the head with a .22, less noise so the neighbors are less likly to complain. Johnny Stewart makes a chicken in distress call, btw

Heck, a high powered Gamo air rifle will kill them that close if you shoot em in the ear.

They are getting braver over the winter since the food is easy and they can see the front door plus no traffic thru there since they have their own private road. I just plan on using the hay bails out there and pen up a chicken outside the main pen and wait for them, they are never far away and come up to the house thru out the day, she has pics of some of them and they very very grey and black and look to be pretty good size. Im 5 10 and they would come up to mid thigh probably standing on all 4 legs. I told her about the hybrids since i saw a article on it and she think they may be them after looking into them. She dont care she just tired of losing chickens all the time and they will sit out there and just sit next to the fence at the chicken coop waiting unless she comes out the door. Plus shes tired of looking outside everytime she goes out the door to see if any of them are around and hope one doesnt have rabies and tries to attack her.

from page 25 of the Outdoor Annual:

"Exceptions: a hunting license is not required to hunt the following:
Coyotes, if the coyotes are attacking, about to atttack, or have recently attacked livestock, domestic animals, or fowl."

If you can get that close use buckshot instead of slugs.

Have you considered just opening a window in the house and shooting from there? Assuming you have windows facing where the coyotes come. 30 yards, .22 long rifle or .22 mag and just gut shoot them if nothing else. They don't have to die right there, the goal is to make them quit getting a free lunch.

Solid body hits is what you are looking for. The bullet can work it's magic anywhere, it doesn't have to be in her yard. Just sayin'.

I would talk to the neighbors and tell them what's about to happen, first. Then I'd load up the 12 guage with some #4 turkey loads, pull the plug out, and sit and wait a while. Then unleash he!! on the chicken eating SOB's. It sounds like you don't even have to hide very well, but I would. Good luck and don't forget to let us know how it went, with plenty of pics! We like death pics...

Mmmm Hmmm

Ever hrard of raw hamburger meat with perch hooks mixed into the meat?
Get some cheap hamburger meat and throw in 7-8 very small perch hooks, and roll them up in a ball(little bigger than a golf ball), and just put out in different places
Make sure th pit doesnt get out though
Thats what my grandfather used to do to the coyotes and packs of wild dogs that got into his livestock!!!

The window wont work since they are on the other side of the fence then the house and no clean shot since there a barn in the way and the coop is at the end of the barn. Neighbors are tired of them as well and all down there shoot things at all hours so it wouldnt be anything people arent used to. Never heard of the hamburger trick before but i can tell her. Does it kill them or just make them hurt and tear up their insides? The pit stays in a fenced in area beside the house on the opposite side of where the coop is. Hes a very mean dog to strangers so they keep him penned up. He used to be able to growl and bark at them and they would leave but now he can do what he wants and they just ignore him now and walk by if they come up by his pen. As far as hiding i have a lean to type barn, round bails of hay, a fence line, trees or even a small ditch so plenty of places all withing range of a shotgun if i want that close to come out and shoot them. I think after the first shot they would scatter so be like a covey of quail taking off when they run lol. Even if i hit them in the back or tail area sure it would make them think twice about coming back after the chickens
And yes if i shoot them ill take pics of the coop that im talking about and pics of the dead coyotes. She has pics of some i believe on her facebook page also but of course they are still alive. She has a good one when it was snowing with the coyote at the fence just loking at her then the coop lol

Ok this is a pic of one of the coyotes and how close you can get to them. I took the pics from my sister in laws facebook page and put it on mine. So you can see how close you can get to them at her place, she said it just stood there even after yelling at it lol.

All the above but realize that you will not get rid of your yote problem. It's like the tx/mex border they are never ending.
Have fun shooting them but it is a 24hr a day job to get rid of them I guarantee you. A sturdy coop or electric wire fence is a better protection for the chickens.
IMO

Why not use a snare if they are coming through a hole in the fence???? Hang large treble hooks from a tree about 4 feet off the ground and cover it in meat... That is the hooking I know of. If they ever start coming at night, hang up some red CHRISTmas lights so you can see them at night without a spotlight!!!

No hole in the fence, they wait till the chickens at times get out and fly over the coop fence, They have clipped their reason but for some reason can still fly lol.
