Need help. What is the best way for an individual to ship a firearm/ammo and what are the regulations on this issue? THanks for the input.

Gotta go through an FFL with a handgun. Both ship from FFL holder I believe but the seller may be able to send directly to a FFL holder. Either way, start looking for a FFL Holder

Point to point in texas, long guns can be shipped post office without an FFL involved. Pistols can be shipped UPS or FEDX without an FFL but they require you to ship overnight air and its about $50. You cannot ship pistols via the post office but an FFL can. I checked all this out and had a pistol shipped from Houston to Emory. You should declare the contents of the package in all cases. UPS requires that the package not be marked in any way that would indicate the contents. I worked there for 32 years and can tell you that thieves love to steal guns. Any out of state transaction requires an FFL on both ends. You can call or go by the post office, UPS and FEDX to confirm. I dont know about ammo but again, you can call...

Ask BATFE.....here is a copy of their reg and link....search the forums too....there are a lot of folks that don't know about shipping "In State".....out of state is a different ballgame, FFL to FFL required....

No FFL required for shipping person to person in TX...use common sense, no phelons, no one under 21....I require copies of Texas Driver's License and CHL....

B8) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier? [Back]

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.

on page 177....

The truth is like a Lion. You don’t have to defend it. Let it loose. It will defend itself.

This response is spot on. To add, not allowed to ship a firearm and ammo in the same package. Must go separate. And with the overnight requirement, it will be cheaper to pay an FFL to ship the handgun as he can use USPS. The cost of the transfer fee and USPS shipping should be less cost than the overnight UPS you would have to pay. Ammo can not be shipped USPS.

Want to add. Though person to person transfers within State are legal, be careful of who you trade with if you do not know them.

I did sell a firearm to another forum member here a while back. I mailed directly to the buyer. I did find later that the firarm I sold became part of a criminal investigation when BATF contacted me. I used to have an FFL and a reverse trace on the rifle led to me. Fortnately I had required a copy of drivers license from the buyer before I would ship. BATF was happy with that and by me being able to provide that information to them they moved on up the line and left me alone. I do not recommend sending a firearm with blind luck to a buyer without knowing for sure who you are dealing with. You do not want that call or visit and given the question have the only answer to give that you mailed it to some screen name on the internet.
