I've been seeing some leases that want ALL exotics killed. They state they want a better whitetail deer herd and genetics on their ranch. Assuming there are a bunch of exotics on this ranch and you have already filled your freezer and have seen bigger exotics on your trail camera.
What would ya'll do if you saw a 4pt axis (1yr old) on your lease at 50yds from your blind? (no one is there w/ you and no one is in camp). So, no one should ever find out.
Letting it walk could forfeit your spot for the following year if the owner found out. Do you take the risk of letting it walk to grow up or not?
I know I would kill it. I'd either buy another freezer, give the meat to a friend or even pay for it to be processed to be given to a needy family.

I'de like to have someone lined up for the meat prior to heading to the lease, so I wouldn't have to rearrange everything in the freezer. If I couldn't find anyone then they would be treated like hogs.

This post is about deer leases I've seen in the past.

I'd shoot it if that is what the landowner wanted.
On our place, we have a certain number of does to shoot (exotics off limits unless you want to shell out extra). If we don't have room for all the does, we can hang them in the cooler and the manager will take them, give them to ranch hands, donate, or whatever. Maybe ask him if he could do something like that for you. Otherwise, I'd try and line up someone on this board with the meat.

why am I in my blind if I have already filled my freezer? I guess I'd be out there since there is nothing else better to do. I can't handle sitting around watching tv or allowing the wife to see me not busy. That's makes for a honey dew list that I'd rather not do. Do you only hunt 3 times a year? Assuming you kill 3 deer and the freezer is full. You never go back out after that?

It's what I read in the past and was wanting oppinions. That's all.

I might deer hunt 3 times a season, some years less, but I try to shoot ducks 30-40 days a season so I don't have much spare time for the deer.

If you like Axis, then look around Rocksprings. Seems like you can't go anywhere without seeing them.

I've hunted around there, but haven't seen any while hunting then. I know they are there. I'm not that lucky though.
I'm all for any place out there. Just need to find one that fits our hunting style and needs.

Now that the boy is hunting it is hard to hunt waterfowl w/o him being able to. He can't hold the shotgun up and aim yet on his own. He needs front assist on a set of sandbags or bi-pod. He's only 6.

Mine has been tagging along since he was 18 months old and started killin' last June. He's got a hog and an axis doe under his belt and it ready for a few more hogs this Friday/ Saturday and Sunday.
They are a lot of fun, but I think my killin' has ended. It's just opened up another part of my life and I'm proud of him. I'm sure there will be days he can't go and I'll get my turn again.
I'm sure your hunting will change as mine did. I'm not complaining though. I've killed a lot of animals, but never an axis. I love eatin' them though.

i wish we could get rid of all our exotics...if you trying to manage a WT herd, it is very difficult to deal with other target species in direct competition with WT. we have axis, sika, fallow, blackbuck, mouflan...oh ya and PIGS!
Nonetheless, our WT herd has shown substantial improvement in the last 2 years. We do harvest alot of axis each year (all year long) but we let fallow walk mostly and then try and manage other species alongside WT. It is tough and we already face many problems.
If I were in your situation. I would shoot the axis and find a way to keep the meat for myself. Quartered and bagged and ready to eat! Yum!

I've never shot an axis but I've heard they taste great and so I could always give the wt to someone
