300 Win Mag. It may have range and super knock down power, but it hurts like h#ll, especially when sighting in! Good for elk tho.

The 22-250 is the best caliber I've ever shot and that is talking about deer hunting. Im not for sure on the total number but I have killed at least 20 deer with a 22-250.

I agree with you z71dustin. 22-250 imo is an excellent deer cartridge, after all we are hunting Texas deer.

i have been that man. unloaded the night before and left the bullets in the truck and realized what had happened as soon as i sat down in the blind. the 3/4 mile walk to the blind was too long and cold for me to go back [/shame] I have a box at each camp.... I have a buddy that leaves 3-4 270 rounds in every blind we have... I am getting old...... I leave water and toilet paper...

Something to drink and tp are two important components of a pack to bring hunting with you, especially the second one, way better than leaves

Caliber and or manufacturer
I would have to say that I think the 22-250 is marginal at best.
Shot a 170lbs managment buck with a 60gr. federal hollow point the deer was broad side at 65 yds...hit him perfect.
He did go down within 100yds but didnt leave a speck of blood; it was a foggy morning and for a while it was looking bad.
Alls well that ends well but I was looking to neck shoot a doe for camp meat; and the oportunity came for the cull buck.
The deer get big where I hunt, and im gonna leave the 22-250 for hog head shots and varmints.

If I'm not hunting something I must be dead.

,As far as mfg. there are some that are better than others, me personally,it's what you want to spend, you can go as cheap as you want to the most expensive you can afford, it's all about what you want to pay for.
Calibers- again I am no expert, just someone that listens to others speak, and I have come to realize that any caliber will take a game animal under the right conditions. .30-.30 has probably accounted for more deer killed in the US to date, would I use it.........no, don't like the caliber, other calibers work better, but we cannot ignore the success of the caliber.
22-250, for me too light for deer, but with the proper shooter and conditions, it is a deadly round, again in the hands of those that knows it's limitations.
Yea, there are some poorly made rifles out there, it's basically in your hands to know your rifle, and if you can succeed in the conditions present.
I'm far from any expert, but I know that if you know your rifle, you know what you can do and not do with it.
Just my opinion. Sorry for the rant.

22-250 may be an acceptable and able choice for the smaller central Texas deer...However I don't see it as an ethical choice for large Panhandle mulies or even the bigger white tail, there or in south texas. All things being equal I just think you need a little more gun....On the flip side of that...I gotta say that the 300 win mag for central texas deer is equally as bad...heck...just get ya a Barret M-82 A-1 and be done with it ::))

I dont wanta get into a pissing contest here. I have a friend that has 5 different 22-250's, one is sighted in at 500 yards, thats all he hunts with, hunts a big place out in Pecos, and kills Mule Deer with the 22-250 every year.

.22 hornet, it can get the job done......but why not use a .222, .223, 22-250 if recoil is an issue.

Anecdotal evidence does not make the 22-250 the best deer caliber. It is far from the worse, but you'd have a hard time finding many people that think it is the BEST. At best, it is "enough" to kill a deer.

I love the 22-250 too. It's just that I don't want to be using one when that buck of a life time walks up.........

the last two posts summs it up for me!
I hunt with a .22-250, and have killed many a deer with them, some have been mature bucks.
as with many things in life, its (imo) just over the line of adaquecy, but not by any means ideal.
but there are far worse things to shoot deer with, ie:
the 30 carbine
.222
.22 hornet
.223
just to name a few.
my personal rule for a .22 centerfire is that a 55grain or heavier bullet has to be traveling over 3500 fps at the muzzle to shoot a deer with it
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.
