I am just back into hunting after raising kids for many years. I want to hunt Nilgai. Any advice on reasonable rates?

I just got back from a Nilgai hunt in south Texas at the Kings Ranch I have lots of information on different places to hunt and where to go and not to go. Dont go to the Kings Ranch to kill one they are like a slaughter house for Nilgai. I am going back in Febuary with a guy down there tha is good priced and has some nice mature bulls. Let me know if you need any information I hunted my butt off for two day and did well but there is better ways to do it I learned!

Welcome to the THF.

Never hunted Nilgia, always wanted to.

One place to check out is the King Ranch web site.

In pricing out hunts in the past, the King's prices are about the most affordable.

There are a few guides/outfitters down in the valley offering hunts and you will just need to shop around for the best price and hunt.

You can find hunts in other parts of Texas, but many of them are on high fence properties that keep a few animals just for clients that want to shoot one with out going to the valley.

Best of Luck on your project.

Thanks for the tip. Gotta start budgeting for such! Pigs are my thing generally, but those Blue Bulls are just off the chart to me.

They are 2 1/2 days all inclusive for 2450. If you don't have the cash right now, book for next year and pay it out. You'll never regret it. It's not a canned hunt.

My father and I have killed more Nilgai than I care to count, mostly off the King, but we've hunted the Kenedy as well. The last time I went was about a year and a half ago with Luther (can remember his last name right now for the life of me) who runs the B-Bar-B, you can look them up. I don't know if the price is still the same but it was $500 to hunt, with a $500/$1000 kill fee for cows/bulls respectively. The hunting was good, not great, but it all depends on where you go, what time of year, etc. We did see some animals though, just nothing that was a shooter.

Be aware the Nilgai hunting isn't like deer hunting in Texas. You're not going to sit in a blind an shoot one out of a window. It's more like being on safari. You'll do a lot of driving until you see some, then stalk them from there, or you'll just shoot them over the hood of the jeep. If you're not quick, they're gone. I'd also recommend taking plenty of gun. Just pretend you're on an african plains game hunt for something big, because it's a lot like that. They're big tough animals.

I would say The King or The Kenedey, used to Bow Hunt them on The KIng, had a blast, you will learn how to spot and stalk, thats for sure.

neck shot is the only way to take one down.
I always aim at the white spot on the neck or the hump on the back. It takes them down quick. 243 cal is all u need.
Ive shot a massive bull 3 times in the chest and behind the shoulder with a 180 gr 30.06 and he still hobbled off

They're tough, don't get me wrong, but they're not that tough. We were usually packing 338's, my father a 338/416 Rem Mag and I've got a custom built 338/378. A 300 Mag would do the trick as well. I've seen them get up from good solid hits on more than one occasion myself, but just like with anything else, shot placement is key. You need to understand their anatomy. If you aim right behind the shoulder like you would on a deer, you're not going to hit them in the heart. For a heart shot you need to aim low in the chest, right as the chest area bottoms out behind the shoulders/legs. That's the sweet spot. It's tough to get used to after putting the crosshairs on whitetails for years, but you'll figure it out.
