Not everyone cares only about the antler size some just want the meat and a young deer eats better than an old one!!!!!!!

The future of deer hunting relies on proper management. Especially now as hunting in Texas becomes more and more limited to the wealthy. Hunting for meat is not a good excuse for improper management and careless killing of young deer. I also hunt for meat. I can find it in a cull, spike, or a doe. I think that with proper education and grassroots level encouragement we can have our meat, and our trophy too. It starts here with the hunters on this board.

YOU sir are missing the point not everyone wants big antlers.NOW slowly which part did you not get ??
again You are talking about managing for antler size if you only want antlers then become a biological engineer and make tiny deer with huge antlers. Some people just want to shoot A NICE YOUNG TENDER GOOD EATING DEER and wether or not you can live with that means nothing to them...

Awesome deer! You need to take your daughter's
out more often, when I take my family out I allways
shoot something, especially if we are driving my
wifes's vehicle.haha

It's not how far a shot, it's how close you got.

DoNisUglyFat - I absolutely understand our discussion, and what you have said. I believe you are missing the point I am trying to make. I encourage you - in fact ask you to please eliminate all the inferior deer that you have come across your hunting path, and some does too. Please show restraint on killing younger deer with a possible future for being nice mature deer that one day will be posted on this board for all to admire. This deer in this thread is a magnificent buck that is being admired, the hunter being congratulated. What a tremendous end to a great story and hunt. I would like to see more of these threads.

This is what I'm not clear on - it is obvious that you enjoy the fellowship of other hunters, and the brotherhood that comes with hunting. Why then would you not - for the sake of other hunters who are searching for that buck of a lifetime join in on the management of deer? I understand that you might not be after a nice mature buck - but why ruin that oppotunity for the one who is.

Would this idea of deer management make it impossible for you to fill your freezer with young, tender, good eating venison?

Paaaleeeessseee,

The future of deer hunting?

I think you confuse "horn management" with "deer management."

In the history of deer hunting (which is a looong time), they did'nt follow you particular horn management goals and deer hunting as endured just fine.

Now the FUTURE is going to depend on how big the horns are?

Give me a break.

Turn that statement back around 180 deg....or....why take opportunity away from ANY HUNTER?

I want to apologise for some of my fellow THF members that do not have the brains or decency enough to just congratulate you on your deer, WITHOUT TURNING THIS INTO A HORN VS. SHOOTING A DEER POLITICAL FOOTBALL.

Smiths Corner is one of my favorite places to eat. But I have found some stiff competition for them over in Newcastle at "Tha Hole In Tha Wall". Be sure and post some pictures when the Taxidermist gets the mount done.

Crazyhorse -I agree, thanks for calling me on that.

Mturner2007 - please accept my appologies. What a deer - again congrats! Look forward to seeing the mount.

I will post a new thread in a little while concerning the the other conversation.

Not a problem,I know people are passionate about hunting
and deer management for the future, but we also must remember
as hunters we must all stick together to be able to have the privilege to hunt together and raise our children to understand what hunting is all about. Thank You all for your
comments they are greatly appreciated!

OH MY GAWD!!What a buck. I'd have pi$$ed my pants if I had that deer in my sights !! Good job, congrats, man.

Hunting is more to me than Antlers on the wall. It's more about the memories you make, and sharing those memories with friends, and family.

I agree, there are a lot of people for some reason that shoot
whatever comes along,I have passed on a lot of deer, some I
should have shot to get them out of the gene pool, but that
patience has paid off..
p.s. no disrespect meant to anyone..

There are people on my lease that shoot the first deer that steps out. they say tis before they shoot. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 BOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I THINK HAS 8. on the other hand people like me wait for a good buck to step out. my lease is in lometa (lampasas county). my brother passed up a 4.5 yearold 10 point that we scored at around 130. we saw him openning weekend and have not seen him again.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

DoNisUglyFat......I agree with you that some folks care more about the meat than the horns, but I think the point of this post is the horns.........you want meat, kill a doe. I love deer meat, but im a horn hunter first. Merry Christmas to horn and meat hunters. GREAT BUCK.

Congrats on a great deer!

I hunt South Texas and that would be a great trophy anywhere in the state.

You mentioned net score and gross score with a lot of deductions, so this is just my opinion on that!

Myself, and people I know and hunt with, don't pay any attention to net score. We always refer to gross score, and believe that the deer deserves what they grow.

I've also taken so called "book deer", and never bothered to enter them, just for that reason. But that's just me, and not to take away from your accomplishment, that is one great buck!

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I like the gross score better myself for obvious reasons,
You hardly ever hear of people saying their net score even
on t.v. shows,I think I will just start saying gross score
and leave net out of it. Thanks for the post, Mike T.
