Has anyone used Bode Feeds for their protein. I have used 2 or 3 different brands of protein with no success. Even added some corn to it and had very little response. I have never used Bode's who has their own blends and formulas. Our ranch is just east of there and I figured maybe if I use someone "local" it may have a different result. I know he feeds on many different ranches in the county. I guess deer in different regions like different types of feed.

Gene is good people. I used his feed when I first started and it is pretty good stuff. I quit because I was buying bulk from him and his driver's were not cleaning out the trucks the way they should have. By that I mean if they are hauling a load of range cubes one day, then they have to make sure none are left in the bays because the next day they could be hauling corn and getting a range cube in corn and then into a feeder clogs the feeder.

This was years ago and I've shifted to Mumme's since then, but I would guess the problem I had with his driver's has been solved.

Seriously, give him a call or go in, he's good folks. If you can find his web site, http://www.bodefeed.com/ he has all the different flavors of protein he makes listed and there ain't a darn thing wrong with it.

If I had some concerns with any of his feed and how to get deer started on it, I would ask him personally. He will work with you. He is a nice man. Sometimes we would get to his store after hours and he worked with us about having the feed on the dock and us leaving a check stuck in the door.

I grew up in Harper and know Gene very well. Gene does not make his own feed. i.e. he does not have a pelletizer. He used to have his feed made by Behrends in Luckenbach. Feeding protein on a ranch where the deer are not used to it takes time. We have fed protien pellets, soybeans, cottonseed, and blackeyed peas over the years. At first, we couldn't get a deer to touch anything. Now after many years, they have learned that what ever is in the feeder is GOOOOOOOOOOOOD and we have no problem changing feeds on them. Additionally, adding more corn to your feed often times increases non-targeted species. For instance...raccoons. They will eat protien no doubt but if you put corn in there with it or feed a pellet with high corn content, they will pick out those pieces first.

Be patient and your deer will eventually eat your feeds.

Hehehe....depending on the make and size of your protein feeder, if you have a coon problem and put corn in with the pellets you are liable to find 250 plus pounds of protein on the ground with the corn kernels picked out and piles of coon poop on the protein that's on the ground. Been there, done that.
