I am looking for a .22 rifle to put a scope on to teach my daughter to shoot. I saw the recall for the 597 17 but what do you think about that gun in the 22lr. Thanks for the help.

Worst shooting 22 I have ever handled, 3 different ones. Go with the Ruger or Marlin

I bought one at wally world and put a cheap simmons scope on it and I have been very happy with it. shoots good and is more accurate than I am. added a 30 round clip to have even more fun. I also have a Marlin and find myself leaving it home more when I go to the range

I have the 597 in 22LR. It is okay...but I would not buy another. My girls shoot the 10-22 and enjoy the heck out of it. Its reasonably accurate, reliable and can be modified to your pocket books limit. I did replace the trigger and bolt buffer.

I recent purchased a CZ452 but the girls would rather shoot the Ruger.

I have two 597's. One took a little work to make a shooter while the other one was a shooter right out the box.

I've got a 10/22 that's been riding in the truck for 15 years and looks like it. It ALWAYS works and hits what you aim it at. I bought a 597 the year they came out. The rear aperature had to be moved as far to the right as it would go. It wouldn't run through a full magazine without jamming every single time. It was a piece-o-chit. I took it to Gander Mountain and got cash for it and never looked back. By the way, several years ago in "Field and Stream"- If you added up all other manufacturers that made semi-auto .22lr rifles total sales combined, it would still not equal the number of 10/22s sold. The ONLY one to buy is the Ruger IMHO.

I had one and it shot well, but sold it to a guy that worked for us. I prefer my browning semi-auto or henry lever action.

I'd suggest a single shot for a first-time shooter. Every shot is intentional, requiring conscious effort, where a semi-auto can surprise an inexperienced shooter. Plus, having only one shot at a time is a good way to ingrain good shooting habits.

I've owned Browning, Ruger, Remington, J.C. Higgins, and Marlin semis over the years, and my personal preference is the Marlin. Tack driving accurate, lasts a looong time, and is priced lower than most.

I had a Marlin semiauto for 22 years and I put several thousands rounds through it before it wore out. I now have a target model 10-22 and it's a shooter but not as accurate as that old Marlin.

A single shot would be great for a first time shooter, That way you could shoot anything from the cb's to the long rifle. You can always move up from there. Bolt action or semi-auto, I love my ruger 10-22 its a tack driver.

That's not true, Marlin has sold 11 million of the Model 60 and Ruger has sold 5 million of the 10-22's.

I have all three and prefer the Marlin overall then the 10-22 then the 597. It more of a chevy/ford discussion in my opinion.

CZ 452 bolt or Ruger 10/22 semi-auto.

My son and a few others now learned on a Marlin 881T.... can be loaded as a single or as a repeater, great open sights...
