Which bullet weight do you guys like for shots over 300 ? I shoot 175 grain psp core lock's right now, but was wondering if there is one that was good out to 450 or so and had less drop than my 175's ?

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

My Kleinguenther 7 Mag is very picky and wont shoot anything but the core lock 150's. Couple other 7 Mags on our place like the Federal Premium 162's. It is all about the gun and what it likes but I agree 175 is allot of lead.
Personally I have shot 9 different rounds through my gun and it shoots horribly with 8 of them but the cheap core locks it will shoot sub MOA with no problem.... So spend some money and try them all out you may be suprised at what you find...
Also, you should see less drop with the lighter weight bullets due to an increase in velocity over the 175... I think...

I always said I would switch to a lighter bullet when I ran out of the 175's and this year I ran out and swithced to a 150 Federal! Best group I could get was about 5" so this year that gun sat in the safe for the first time in 10 years! Next year I will be switching back to the 175 Core Loct even though I aint a fan of that bullet!

I shoot 150gr. Remington Scirroco's out of my A-Bolt 7mag. About a 3/4" 3 shot group if I do my part.
I shot a Fallow Buck in Ozona a few years ago with it at 437 yards. Had a complete pass through and deer went about 20 yards. Shot a Axis Buck with it 2 years ago at 35 yards and had a complete pass through and he went about 40 yards. Bullet has performed very well every time.

I shoot 139 gr Hornadys and will have a quarter size or smaller group at 300. Now the knockdown power i dunno. I have shot out to 250 on a deer and dropped it but i dont know bout the longer range

A quarter-sized (i.e. less than 1") at 300 yards? That's pretty spectacular, especially with a hunting weight rifle!

I have always shot Core-Lokt 150's out of my gun. Never had any problems other than the occasional "operator error". The thing I've always liked about Core-Lokts is that they are more readily available than, say, Federal, Hornady, etc. Every mom and pop shop in every small town has them if you need them but good luck trying to find the high dollar stuff at the spur of the moment.

I use 139 grain Hornady centerfire rifle ammo that I purchased from Academy for $34.99. Now, the farthest I've shot has been 235 yards and dropped the deer in his tracks. I don't know how well they would perform at 450 yards and greater. ________________

I shoot 175 grain psp core lock's right now Why? Well I figured for Mule Deer, which is it's primary job, a 175 would have the knock down power and energy to do the job. It is wonderful out to 300 as my pics of animals taken this year have shown. But I need something that will reach out and touch a mulie at 400-500 and do the job without having so much hold-over. Thought maybe you guys would have some thoughts (thanks for your responses). Was looking for one that would go 500 yards up a mountainside and do the job.............. You guys have been shooting them much longer than me as I only acquired this weapon two years ago. I practice at the range quite a bit, but that leaves a lot out as well.

My friend runs the federal/165 grain sierra gamekings and has taken many mulies in Co, NM, and WY. I would just run whatever shoots good in your rifle. Hit them good and any bullet will work!!

I have a Browning A-Bolt Eclipse...shoots like a dream and I didnt have to pay 2k for it! lol Actually i had 3 bullets touching to be exact. I have done it a lot with that gun. Of course this is bench shooting but its still good.

You guys have been shooting them much longer than me as I only acquired this weapon two years ago. I practice at the range quite a bit, but that leaves a lot out as well. Fair enough. When I think of a long range hunting caliber the first thing I look for is speed and with less than 2000 fps remaining at 500 with the 175s I would pass on that combo. The 150s and 160s have a better retained energy at that range and better performance. It takes considerable speed to get the 175s to expand and do there job and at that range they have a tendency to not expand unless hitting bone.

I see. Thank you very much for your response and responses. I have come to the Hornady 162 BTSP. I will see how it does. Anybody need some 175's cheap ? Again, I tremendously thank you for your opinions and advice. It has proven invaluable in my search and research.
