I've been in the market for a Remington 700 or Weatherby Vangaurd. Last Friday I went to Sports Authority and found that all of their guns were 20% off. I settled for the Ruger M77R 270cal. I was hoping to here from anyone who owns one of these and let me know about any ups and downs about this rifle. I did my homework for a couple of weeks and this was my 3rd choice. Just couldn't pass up the price.

My BIL has one and won't hunt with anything else. His is also a 270 and he shoots reloaded 130 gr nosler ballistic tips with great neck shot success.

Rugers are fine rifle's, I've owned many. My only problem with them has been the triggers, but a good gunsmith can take care of that. They've just never had a crisp enough pull to suit me. Some great after market triggers out there.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

I shot a Ruger M77/270 for years and years with absolutely no problem. One of my hunting buddys talked me out of it and he loves it too. If you get trigger work done, be SURE you get a good gunsmith. I had a DFW-area gunsmith do a trigger job on my Ruger 77/44 and he got the trigger so light that it goes off when you touch it. My only option now is an after-market trigger upgrade. Since the gun is out of production now, triggers may be hard to come by.

Great looking guns. Handle well, strong and reliable. Some question the accuracy-I have never had any complaints. The trigger is the main issue, and it can be overcome.

Please post name & numbers of any gunsmith that will work on the trigger of Ruger M77. I have a 280 that the trigger is horrible and the 2 gunsmiths I have talked too will not touch it. They want to put in after market triggers. Thanks

get a trigger job and bed the barrel right off the bat and you will have a real shooter. i also have a ruger .270 and had these things done and i can get right around and inch with most factory ammo. timeney makes a good trigger but a gunsmith can get it to around 3 pounds, but for liability reasons not all will work on stock triggers as they are not supposed to be adjustable

One of Rugers best rifles, in my opion. I own one, in 270 also. I love it. I have had it a few years and still shoots well and I didn't have the trigger reworked. They are tack drivers, and good reliable rifles.

Trigger jobs on Rugers are a) dangerous; liability ridden; b) a pain in the arse; c) pointless since you can get a better trigger from an aftermarket replacement for less money; or d) all of the above.

Correct answer....D

I have a couple of Rugers, and have sold and worked on several others over the years. There is some work that can help the trigger, but making it lighter falls under the answer choices above.

I have a buddy that shoots nothing but M77's and has learned to be awesome with them. I have a KM77 in 308 and the trigger is manageable.

Just depends on what you like, what you learn with, and how much time, patience, and money you have to spend....

UPS, they are tremendously reliable, durable, and accurate.

For the gentleman with the 77/44, it uses the same trigger mechanism as the 77 Varmints that come with the Target Gray finish in 22 Hornet and 223, if you are looking for an aftermarket trigger group. There should still be some of these available.

Since I kind of slammed him, I don't think I ought to put his name out here. I'll send you a PM.

I am glad someone else posted that they like Model 77's and haven't had trigger work done. I have 4 Model 77's at present, but at one time had 5. I never noticed any problems with the trigger, but I guess my arthritic old hands, and the fact that most of my shooting is done at hair, has something to do with my opinion. The only rifles that I have that I like better than my Rugers are my 375 which I bought used, but it had been customized, and my 458 CZ Safari Magnum.

The only thing I ever had done to one of my Rugers was I had the barrel replaced on my 35 Whelen. It came from the factory with a fairly heavy 22 inch barrel, and I had it replaced with a 26 inch medium sporter weight barrel. I am nopt a fan of short barrels on rifles.

I have never had any complaints from any of my Ruger rifles. My .338 is a tackdriver, and it hasn't had any trigger work done on it at all.

I am thinking of getting one in .270 in the near future. I shoot left-handed, so my selection of bolt-action rifles is very limited. I do really like how the Ruger's cost the same in RH or LH, I just wish they had more than five calibers(25-06, 270, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, 30-06.) Although that selection is not very big, it is as good as any other company I guess.

I have 3 Ruger 77's and have not had any trigger problems. The one I have had for 30 years has killed almost as many trukeys as deer and not one turkey was shot in the body ( all neck shots from 50 to 100 yards). My best shot was on a turkey was at 120 yards with the 220 Swift. You can probably guess what caliber the one is that I have had for 30 years.

these are great rifles love rugers. not to fond of the mk2 though. dont like the fixed trigger. the old ones with the tang safety you can adjust, so no real need for after market triggers.

i'm left handed, so are my bolt rifles. i originally wanted a timney but was told that on a left handed gun, they trigger assembly was different and they did't make them. did't make sense to me either. btw, i dry fired my buddy's sendero in 25-06 yesterday and all i can say about that trigger is "wow"

About this Ruger trigger comment.

This is my personal opinion of Ruger triggers. This opinion comes from years of shooting bench-rest rifles, where the triggers i was shooting were light, crisp and had zero slack or over travel. This does not mean Ruger puts out rifles with bad triggers. It just means their triggers do not meet MY standards. I will also state that most factory triggers on most factory rifles, do not meet MY standards.

I also am left handed but have shot right handed guns all of my life. I almost bought a left handed gun when I realized that it would change everything I have learned. Its so natural for me to keep my finger by the trigger and my eye on the scope while operating the bolt with my right hand. Seems like an advantage for me to shoot a right handed gun.

That is the way Lora(campcook) shoots her Model 77 Ultra-lite in 257 Roberts. I have talked to her about getting her a left hand rifle but she has worked at being able to bring her right hand back, work the bolt and re-grab the forearm, so I guess we will keep it that way.

I know what you mean about shooting right-handed guns. All of my shotguns are right-handed, but I haven't shot bolt actions enough to be used to a right-handed model. As a result, switching to a lefty gun won't be a problem. I have been looking around for a lefty .270, but none of the stores have them in stock. I guess I will just have to special order one.
