I'm thinking about getting a 25-06 for varmints and was wanting opinions on this and other calibers. I will be hunting mostly p-dogs and some yotes. Also opinions on rifles. I'm thinking about A Tikka T-3 lite. I think that's what it's called.

For PDogs & the occassional Coyote, I'd think a Heavy Barreled Savage in a .22 cal Centerfire would serve you better.

I'm curious to see how this thread turns out. I'm looking also, and hear great things about the 22-250 and 204 Ruger. 223 seems to be the cheapest to shoot. Let's see what the marjority says?

I think they all will kill them just as dead but the availability and price of the .223 ammo is why I use it. I own a Tikka T3 Lite in .308 and it is a very nice rifle and very accurate.

Well I just moved to North Dakota and from what I'm being told most shots will be long. I've never owned a varmint gun and just want to get started. I don't think the ammo cost is to much different, just a couple of dollars. I just thought that the 25-06 could work for whitetail too.
What about a 243?

25/06 is a pretty stout round for your typical prairie dog shoot where hundreds of rounds may be fired in an afternoon. not only will the recoil likely become bothersome, it will be impossible to see your hits.
For a PD rifle, a heary barrel 22-250 would be about right.
For yotes (where fewer shots are taken at shorter ranges, and you often move from spot to spot) a sporter-weight rifle would make more sense. A 25/06 would be fine here, but it's really more power than you need.

I was using a 22-250, but since I bought my AR, that's about all I carry now. It's light weight, cheap ammo and you can buy different uppers if you want another caliber.
Mmmm Hmmm

my go to varmint gun is a savage model 12 22-250. never had one run off, always drop dead. Shooting a 50gr. V-max.
daylight hunting i use a .243 with 95gr. SST's. I carry this because its lighter and easier to walk with.
just recently bought a remington 700VS in a .223 so when i get it sighted in i will use it some at night because its going to be heavy also and i would rather shoot it using the rack to rest on.

i will probably never change from the 22-250. But i got to kill something with the 700VS. To be honest with you, im probably never going to find a real reason to keep the 700VS and will more than likely end up trading it for something else that i will use more often. The savage will never be sold or traded.

I hear you as I am chomping at the bit to lay something in the dirt with my new Savage. You will love this, but I woudn't even consider swapping you the Savage for the 700VS anymore.

I have and had several different small to mid size caliber rifles for coyote hunting. I prefer the .243 for yotes, but if you're going to be shootin p-dogs then I would say a .22 caliber would be plenty. Got my buddy a 25-06 as wedding present last year...great round for coyotes. It's more than necessary, but it gets the job done and isn't too bad on fur unless you shoot em in the face when they're behind some brush and mesquite tree

you won't go wrong with a .223 or 22-250. my yote gun is an ar15 in .223, if they made an ar in 22-250 thats what i would be using.
