A question for all you guys that know a lot more about this weapon than I do. I have many guns but not an AR- yet. Looking for the best bang for your buck. Suggestions, comments, things/brands to stay away from.

Thanks,
KP

Building one would be the best bang for your buck, should be able to get in right under $600 for a kit gun, a little lower if you shop parts.

There are only a handfull of true manufacturers so regardless of the brand name on the weapon, the parts were made to military spec by one of 4 or 5 companies. All parts are interchangeable so except for finish, they're all real close to being the same. The only real advantage of one brand over another is resale value. For the above reasons, that shouldn't matter but it does.

Most importantly, you need to know how you're going to use it so you can decide what configuration you want.

Double Star DS-4 (M4) new, complete, ready to shoot for $729...
DPMS LoPro (Optics Ready flat top) new ready to shoot...$729
Charles Daly Defense M4 ..............$799
Bushmaster OPtics ready ..............$799

My best pick though... Bushmaster Patrol M4 $849

Really any of these are fine, mine is a Bushmaster...I would not be afraid of the DS4 for $729 either

If you were to choose from the rguns list, the bold is the best in that option and at a STEAL of a price

i picked up a Smith and Wesson M&P15 OR the other day for 799 through CDNN. It came with a T-dot reflex sight, laser, and a mid length quad rail + 5 30rd mags from S&W. you get the original handguards too.

You have a good point, my thoughts are that I would like to buy one because I fear they may be almost impossible to buy/afford down the road, especially if what's his face has anything to do with it. I have no real desire to hunt with it, I have enough rifles for that as it is. So I guess it would be a hobby gun.

What I'm looking for-
* lite weight
* collapsable stock
* open sights w/ option to add scope if desired
* reliable

I have no desire ( at this time ) for a heavily modified rig with lights and lasers hanging off it. That may change but for now I want to keep it simple.

I like Stags. I have a Stag upper that I run piles of cheap steel cased ammo through and it just gobbles it up like there's no tomorrow.

My experience with my Stag upper has been the same.

Can anybody give me any feedback on brands to stay away from? Maybe one particular brand is know to be troublesome or seems they can't get the bugs worked out, etc.

thanks guys!

This is just what I've read on posts on some forums. I cannot personally vouch for it since I don't own one. I've read quite a few posts from owners of Rock River ARs that they won't feed the Wolf and/or Monarch ammo reliably. So many things could cause that (such as a mag lip) that I definitely wouldn't paint all RRA rifles with that brush.

Blackthorne/Hesse/Vulcan are all they same company. Terrible quality. They are hands down the worst I've seen. Century Arms are pretty much junk too. Olympic Arms has improved considerably but I still wouldn't have one.

I have a RRA, Bushmaster and a Double Star, they all shoot better than I do! No problems with any of them.
I agree with Old_Town on his decision on the ones not to get.

A Veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard, or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount of “up to and including my life.”

Youre guarranteed to get an AR15 out of the bin, but in the last few years, you werent able to select brand of lower or upper. You could get lucky and get a CMMG lower with a 1:7 upper, but highly doubtful. most of these will be DPMS or Doublestar lowers with DPMS or model 1 uppers.. For the price, it will work well enough, but make sure you stake everything because it will need it. later on, upgrade what you want after you learn what you really need.

If i didn't already have the rock river ar15 that i have in .223, i would get one in the 6.8spc. i bought mine primarily for varmint hunting mostly yotes. after i bought it, we started having an issue with pigs. for pigs i use hornady 75 grain bullets, they seem to be pretty effective up to this point. the great thing about an ar, if you think you don't have enough fire power just pull the trigger until your satisfied that you do...

A work buddy bought one of the Bargain Bin rifles a few weeks ago and got at DMPS lower and a CMMG upper. He paid extra for hand select and it was in very good condition. You'll always be able to sell the upper or lower off separately (or the whole gun for that matter) for what you have invested if you decide you want something different in the future.
