I have a dozen Duke #2 coil spring traps that ive used several years. Ive never had a problem with cats pulling out but ive only caught a handful of coyotes, most of them can slip their paw out. And most of the raccoons i catch with try to chew their hands off. Do any of yall use the traps with the rubber jaw? Are they more effective at holding coyotes?

Are the jaws off set on your traps? I thought about the same thing. Off set jaws have a gap in between them. Rubber wont be better. It sounds like the springs may be shot. You can buy new springs. Also you may need to "tune" your traps. Make sure the pan is flush or just below the jaws when set. Also it should trip with a short push. Too long and the coyote will feel it and be pulling his foot back and only get one toe or fur. You should also use a short chain. No longer than 10 inches. Coyotes will fight harder than cats. I assume you are waxing and using gloves when setting.

My traps are not offset but i might do so work on them. The springs are in good shape and they still have quite a bit of pop in them. Thanks for the help

is their a catch circle? if you get a good pad catch or catch them high on the foot they shouldnt pull out. sounds like your getting toe catches and then they pull out. i use some duke 1.75 offset 4 coil and never had any problems with pullouts. ive caught 40# yotes and they held fine. you want your pan tension about 3-4 pounds for yotes. you dont want any pan creep which will cause them to pull out the second the trap fires causing toe catches. also, your trap needs to be bedded solid with no wiggle or play in the trap. when a yote steps on the jaws of the trap and feels it move he will then scratch and paw at your trap and uncover it and sometimes set it off. hope this helps.

also i forgot, racoons are bad about chewing their toes when caught in footholds. they make special coon traps that prevent this but they are pricey. lil grizz gettters and coon cuffs just to name a couple. very productive and faster to set than footholds but just way too much money for me at this point.

I used to have the same problem, and got away from putting bait directly on/in the trap but indirectly. Also, it was a big coon or beaver I used two traps.
