I had several requests this year to accomodate disabled hunters. One was a disabled veteran. I really want to accomodate these type of requests but dont want to stumble through it. Can anyone provide me a good information source for some of the common specs. (door sizes for hunters in wheel chairs, typical restroom requirements, or anything else that can help me with this) I'd love to cater to disabled veterans but I want them to enjoy it and be comfortable in the house and stands.
Thanks - Dale

Hey Bubba I take Soldiers and Disabled Veterans hunting but I dont have information on the width and all of the doors. I have a house that I put them in but have not put anyone in a wheel chair in yet. I mainly focuss on the Soldiers and Disabled Veterans coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan. This is the most satisfying thing you will ever do. Worth much more than any amount of money. Thanks for doing this and I hope that I can help you and also help you get some hunts. I am working on getting with Soldiers Angels now.

I think I am going to try to buy a cargo trailer to convert into a blind. (if I can find one reasonably priced) I figure the folding door in the back could be used at the ramp.

most chairs unless electric require 42 inch openings to include Full grown hunter, you have a chair 36 plus their hands on the wheels, of course unless it is electric. If you are going to transport the hunter in anything to the blind, makes sure you have chocks and straps if your take them on a trailer. Just got back from a disabled hunt and it was so great to see this guy had a trailer so he could take the wheelchair bound hunters to turkey blinds, pulled behind a mule

I have 36" doors on the house My chair fits through them fine even with my hand on the wheels.

most manual chairs are around 26-28" wide, and that's with the mountain bike tires on them. some of the 'wider' guys have wider chairs i'm sure, so you'd have to prepare for that if you're building an accessible blind.

Sorry for the delay in responding. You need 3-0 doors (36") for ample wheelchair access. In bathrooms, you need one grab bar behind the toilet, centered, with one end 12" or less from the side wall, and a least 36" long. On the wall next to the toilet, you need a grab bar with one end 12" or less from the back wall, that extends out at least 50" from the back wall. A good rule of thumb for truning radius is to have at least a 5' diameter open area between the toilet and another obstruction, like a sink or wall. You can get all the ADA compliant regulations off their website on the internet.
