I read on the internet that the world record axis had a 40 inch horn measurement. I shot an axis buck recently that measures 36 inches. Would that classify it in anything in Texas? I know its a great buck, but is it good enough for any type of listing or something? Just curious.

It should definitely be a gold medal animal if it has half-way decent caudal tines and brow tines. A 36" Axis is a hell of a trophy!! Congratulations!!

Dude! That is an awesome trophy! There are two contacts to look into. The "Record Book of Exotics" founded by Thompson Temple from Ingram Texas. He has a record book system for Texas exotics. The other is SCI (Safari Club International). Both can be found on the internet. I have just gone thru the process of having an Aoudad scored with both of these systems. Their phone #'s are on the internet sites. Not too hard to get it done. You will have to find an SCI scorer near you, they score it, then you mail it to the them. I did speak with Mr. Temple and he said he would accept a score from an SCI scorer. Also, the score sheets are on their websites along with measuring methods, just print. It does cost a little money to have your trophy records processed but it is not much.

I emailed the taxidermist that has the axis buck. Even though the longest horn measures 36 inches, he didn't seem to think that it would score that high because the main beam on the other side is slightly shorter. I didn't know that would make that big of difference on the score. Any thoughts? Here is a dif pic below.

It may fall short of gold, maybe high sliver range, just tape him.The R.O.E. scoring is eazy to do.And in the end, the value of the trophy is in the memories of the hunt imo.

thats a hell of a deer

i think it would score gold but i'm not as good with axis as I am with whitetail....i'm still in the small, average and f-ing huge way of judging.

lol but by any means its a nice buck!

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I went to SCI's website, but the link for the measurer locator wouldnt open to anything. Was looking for one around the Uvalde area.
I contacted ROE, but I havent heard back yet from them.

There used to be a guide in Leakey that was SCi, I'll see if I can locate contact info.

We have a 34 and a 36 on the wall, very nice... asymetry was not a deduction in axis that I recall, most are slightly different anyway...

In a standard room it's odd seeing the heads mounted at or below eye level to clear the antlers

Very nice deer! Deducts won't matter on an axis. He'll do better in the annual ROE score than SCI - SCI's got more history, and there are some whoppers in there (i.e. 40+ inch axis) a 36 inch rifle kill with those brows & caudal points will make solid book middle of the pack, but that's certainly not knocking him!

Free range or high fence axis? For SCI, there are different categories and where it would "place" would depend on the category. Also, you have to be a member of SCI to enter a trophy in their record books.

Its a free range Axis. I will probably just go with ROE since I am not a member of SCI yet.

I called ROE the other day, but we have been missing each other lately. I still need to get a hold of him. There isnt a time line on when you can file is there?
