Make sure and put some kind of wild hog feed in there. There usually not just going to wander off in a big cage depending on what size it is).

Try some pig out. When I cant get them to come to corn I use that and it usually brings them in.

1 cup of deisel to 4 gallons of corn, mix well, pour most of it in a few places inside of the trap, and a little outside, leading into the trap(doesnt hurt to pour a little pigout in the piles also) depending on what kind of trap, a box trap, we put dry jello(2 or 3 boxes) in an old tube sock and hang it from the top of the trap, along with diesel corn

Was he not baiting it at all?
Another thing we do is put a feeder directly over the trap with a 5 gallon bucket with the bottom cut out screwed around the timer/control box. This forces the corn to drop directly into the feeder. When we are not checking the trap we wire it open so it can not be tripped and also gets the hogs comfortable with going in and out of the trap.
For heavy baiting when we are at the lease we will sour some corn with old beer and water. After a couple of days we will put about a beer can full of diesel.
Wealth is of the heart and mind and not of the pocket

Don't put any feed/bait/attractant on the outside, always bait the inside to make them go in.

Seems to me that you just described your problem. When I'm away from the ranch I leave my traps with the doors wired open and a "pig pipe" full of corn inside. The pigs get comfortable with going in and out. When I'm on the place overnight I set up the trip wires. Caught a bunch of 'em the last two years. I never saw much need for jello and commercial hog attractants, as I've never seen any hog turn up his nose at plain ol' corn... Just my $0.02

Have to let the hogs get comfortable with going in & out of the trap whenever they please, once they do so, set it as Reverend mentioned.

You don't necessarily have to put any hog bait in there. Corn should do it. If the pig wants to eat he'll go in, if not he won't. Just be patient.
The beauty of the Second Ammendment is it won't be needed until they try and take it.

After learning this I'd recommend moving the trap to a different location and start ALL over. Make sure the trap door is ALWAYS OPEN (wired or set). Probably educated/ pi$$ed off some the hogs by not having it open all the time.....reason for relocation. It would be like teasing them. After awhile they'll loose interest all together.
