Hey guys,
I have had a 17.HMR for about a year now and have not been able to get out and shoot a coyote with it yet. Now I know some of you just love trashing the .17 but I believe it's a very good gun. For those of you who have one or used one. Will it drop a coyote or kill it within say 20-30 from where you shoot it? Now I know you say with the right shot placement but I am talking about right in the shoulder.
My model is a Marlin 17 HMR model 917 V. I got a bipod and nice Center point scope on it.

I love my .17! It is def. on the light side for coyote's but it will def. do it with the right shot placement like you said. I have a buddy that has dropped 2 in their tracks at about 100yds with shoulder shots and one that ran about 50yds he said. You will def. be better off with the 20 grains for coyotes over the 17 grains because they wont explode on impact like the 17's do. I would go for head shots if you can though. Good luck and let us know how you do!

I want one, but not for serious varmint hunting. I just don't know if it has the power to break through the bone on a sholder shot. Head shots seem like they would be the best bet under 100 yards.

You better be a good shot with that .17. Either headshot or heart or that thing is gonna run off and youll never see it again.

I have not killed a yote with mine, but have seen the damage its done to jacks at up to 120 yards. There is no way it won't put a gape in a yote. Yotes are tougher than jacks, but they ain't deer and they sure as hell ain't hogs! Next time you are out at the range take one of those empty plastic boxes of .17 rounds and fill it with water and shoot from about 50 yards. Once you ee that you will no longer wonder if it will take a yote. Great gun, great fun and CHEAP to shoot!!!

I have dropped a bobcat in his tracks but thats the biggest animal I have taken with mine so far. Plenty of foxes, coons, and Rabbits out to 150yds though and none of them have taken another step! And shooting cans and bottles filled with water is a blast too like grey said!

I love mine, I only shot sguirrels with it but the bullets explode. Some of the squirrels are missing heads when they fall, others have a tiny hole in their ear and the other side ot their head missing. It does ALOT of damage. My model is a Marlin 17 HMR model 917 V. with a bull bbl. I shot a squirrel @ 100 yards.

I love mine. Never shot a coyote, but I wouldn't hesitate to. Dropped a hog that topped 300 at 100 yards. Dropped chin first, right in the earhole. Shot placement is key though.

Love my "high speed BB gun"! Every thing I've ever shot with I shot in the head, hog, turkeys, and coons, so I don't know about a shoulder shot on a yote... I would think if it hit bone the bullet would desinigrate. I'd try right behind the shoulder. first choice would be head or neck shot.

Thanks guys and yea Grey it is bull barrel.
And yes I can shoot one in the head I have hole in hole shots at about 100 yards. I just said that because I hunt at night and some coyotes take off when I light hits them so I was wanting to know how far it would run off if I hit it in the shoulder.

Have shot a few small hogs, maybe 30 pounds or so, in the shoulder and they dropped. I don't know how confident I would be at a moving target in the shoulder. If you hit it right, it will kill it, but doesn't leave much room for error. I'd probably take something bigger.

I've dropped 3 hogs with mine. The farthest shot being 60 yards. All three dropped in their tracks after head shots. The largest one was about a 150lb boar. I got a Marlin 917V as well. I LOVE THIS GUN!!!

I've heard they take coyotes consistently with good shot placement as others have said. I've got a cheapo Mossberg 817 and it'll do half an inch at 100 yards so I have no doubt that it'll bring one down :P
I reallllllly love my .17!

I killed a coyote this afternoon with mine. I had it to get rid of some coons that were hitting the feeder and a couple coyotes came out. The only shot I could get was facing away. I shot it in the back leg and it started trying to bite the wound, and I put another round into the back of its head. It dropped in it's tracks. This was at about 80 yds with 17 grain V-Max.
I am also a very good shot with this rifle, it is a Ruger M77-17 with a Bushnell 3200 10x Mil Dot scope on it. It is a great rifle, and I really wouldn't have used it on coyotes before tonight, but now that I have I know it will work just fine. Under a light I could put a round right between the eyes, and I'm pretty sure that would kill the dog.

Dropped first yote yesterday with my new 17, 130 yards 17 grain V MAX D.O.A.! That's awesome. Although that is definitely pushing the limitations of the round.

Nice man! You got any pics? And did you range that 130 yds? That's a pretty far shot for the .17. Did it kill it with one shot? Where did you hit it?
