I like it cold, but to be honest, when it gets down to the low 20's or in the teens it does me more harm than good. Wetlands with lots of vegetation tends to ice over easily.
I am kind of worried about later this week and this weekend.

Well Im just jealous that I have to start student teaching the week of the coldest front we've had all season. Normally I would have 2 more weeks of hard hunting. Good luck to all you weekday hunters and Junfan I hope you get tons of new birds and your wetlands don't completely ice over.

Here is the forecast for my place:
THURSDAY hi 30 low 10
FRIDAY hi 27 low 15
SATURDAY hi 37 low 19
And I have found that in my bottoms the temps are usually 3-5 degrees below the forecast posted for the nearest town.
Thurs & Friday are what's worrying me....thinking that action may just freeze me over and move the ducks off.
I don't normally bitch about cold, but that's gonna be some butt-a$$ cold hunting.

Being cold is not the issue. Ducks leave when water is frozen over big time. And this won't be any of this 1/8" stuff.
I'm probably going, just worried my birds will be pushed out.
For those of you who hunt the Red River, this might be your weekend.

3 days of cold will not hurt a thing. Its been colder than that up north this year and the ducks were still up there. It wont do a thing to the big water, just freez up the small tanks for a few days then back to normal. Find the open water and you will find the ducks.

For those of you who hunt the Red River, this might be your weekend. I will be within a couple of mile of it. and not worried bout ice on the big pond getting to bad since we will have a south wind according to the weather channel.

Temps in the low 20's for a few days can shut down alot of areas back in AR, but if you are prepared, it will concentrate the birds, and sometimes you can have the best hunts of your life when its super cold! Just as long as the birds don't leave, which it seems like shouldn't be too big of a problem in Houston area? I'd figure that the birds make it to the coast, they're done, right?

When it freezes over the birds go to the rivers and any open water so that would be the key to finding them. Then when it starts to thaw out they will come back this time of year. The good thing is what ever birds left up North will make there way down. Lots and Lots of Mallards around North Texas right now and this is where they come to winter. I typically sleep in when it is compltetely iced over then when it thaws out I get out and hunt. That could be 10:00, 11:00 or when ever. Everything we have is a wetland so the ice can get thick. However, we have some big lakes that if we want we can hunt. Even in the last several days it has been icing up. Then as it thaws they all come back.

Headed to the Playas for hunts on Saturday and Sunday. One of the ponds has running water so I am hoping it will not completely freeze over. Any thoughts from the hunters that hunt the panhandle. I have broken ice there before and done well with temps around 20. Single digits temps are beginning to worry me.

Things have been slow on my 12 acre lake in NE Fannin County this season. We've got lots of shallow wetland areas near us that have been holding a ton of ducks, so if those freeze over, perhaps I'll finally get some more birds!

I have been pheasant hunting(Plainview) with almost everything froze over, and the few pot holes that were not were black with birds. Good luck up there!
