I obviously have a mountain lion that has moved into the adjoining land around my house. I live out in the country and have actually seen mountain lions in the past in my back pasture and one run over on the side of the road down from my house.

The problem is, this lion is carrying off a baby goat each and every night,, total of 11 so far. I've sat out till I couldn't see any more and no sign of her. One night, there were 3 babies gone. I found one of the babies by the back fence. It had teeth indentations on both sides of it's body, as if a big jaw had carried it. The large holed teeth marks lined up on both sides of it's body. She obviously must have had two in her mouth at the same time and dropped one as she jumped the fence.

There are no holes or any place to get in under my pasture fencing. It's 5 foot tall sheep fencing (squares only 2" by 4") with 2 strands of barbed wire on top.

I'm thinking about trying to place some kind of poison around the back fence where she is obviously jumping in from the creek.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of her? Maybe plug in a radio with the volume turned up and place it in the barn. She is not afraid to come in the barn and steal the babies!

She will not come to a call either. Done tried that with all my different mounth calls and electronics. She shows up around 2 and 3 in the morning, according to my dogs and the hell that they raise each time they see her.

You know any lion hunters in the Trans Pecos region? Maybe they could be talked into bringing their dogs out.

The problem is with the surrounding land. It's managed for a family heir's foundation of the late Watt Matthews from Albany. They do not allow any type of hunting on any of the land they own around me. It's loaded with coyotes too. I was told that they wouldn't allow me to shoot coyotes on their land. But, if they were driving around and saw me "that they wouldn't see me". So, I'm very limited as to how to get rid of this lion.

Stay up on the weekend and blas that s.o.b when she comes in. Nothing better then getting dressed in full camo and go hunting in your Barn.

Have you thought about baiting it, like they do leopards in Africa? That would make an interesting hunt. Hang something up in a tree, and wait for them to hit it?

One thing’s for sure…they (it) won’t stop as long as baby goats or sheep are around. Once they’ve cleared out all the deer they’ll keep pounding the ranches until either the food source is gone or they are killed. They can kill and eat at least two baby sheep or goats a week. They could just as easily kill the adults, but the babies they can consume completely before packs of yotes run them off, which would be likely if the prey was much bigger.

With all that said – you have a big problem, Tommy. It’s no small matter and the neighbors should realize it. There’s no telling how many lions are out there…

My first thought, since I’m not a seasoned lion trapper by any means, would be a hog trap with a triggered trap door. Place meat on the trip wire, tie it on good and snug and just leave it.

Another thing that came to mind is something like catnip on a tan or brown rag tied to a pie plate (foil) dangling from a limb – right over #4 or 4 1/2 Newhouse traps or snares. They are curious animals.

I’m sure there’s folks on here that know much more than I do about it, I’m just wanting to throw some thoughts around. It still puzzles me about the neighbors, though…

Might help to see if they're up for a little education about what prowls their property. Can't hurt.

Sorry to hear about your troubles...

A neighbor of mine one time staked a live goat out in front of his deer blind and set up some red lights and killed a mountain lion that had been getting his kid goats.

I SAY CALL IT UP AND SHOOT IT. THERE ARE PLENTY OF KID GOAT DISTRESS CALLS OUT THERE, YOU CAN ALSO USE A GOOD LOW PITCH DISTRESS AND IF CALL IT UP THAT WAY, I WOULD GET YOURSELF AND A BUDDY OUT THERE AND CALL IT UP. SET UP CLOSE TO THE PIN THAT THE GOATS ARE AT. MIGHT TRY THAT. IF I WAS CLOSER I WOULD SWING BY AND HELP YOU OUT. AARON

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I tried one trick that I wouldn't want to mention on line in case of some PETA freak reading it and having a heart attack. Let's just say that something ate part of the meal I left for them back there, but didn't come back for seconds.

Bayourat... yeah, the main ranch is located on the banks of Lake Coleman, at the mouth of the creek. The lion problem we had down there stopped about 3 years ago. This lion is just South of Abilene, at the North base of the tall hills between Lawn and Abilene.

The Matthews foundation has more land around Texas than I ever imagined. The land to my East and South is owned by the foundation. I talked to the people handling the foundation and they said that NOTHING can be shot on any land owned by the family foundation, no matter the damage they are causing.

My neighbor across the road had a baby calf killed two weeks ago and 1/2 eaten. That was before my baby goats were being born.

I think I'm going to put out a hog trap back there and hang 4 or 5 snares on a path that the yotes travel. I was trying to stay away from the snares because of some deer that I have feeding in my back pasture also. But, this is not going to stop until I run out of baby goats.

Looks like time to set up my tripod and sit in it with my red light and calls.

I know what you mean, Seth...that stuff would kill a gator. I did have one girlfriend that liked it, but she thought Catfish Charlie tasted good on a cracker, too....

I know what you mean about colateral damage, Tommy, feel the same way myself. I know it might come down to it, but I think the hog trap might be a good starting point.

Good Luck!

Its gonna git cold, maybe you need to leave it some anti freeze with its meal so it wont freeze up.

Maybe you should try talking with this mountain lion and tell him how much you love those baby goats, and how sad it makes you when he eats them, offer to provide assistance to him and his family for food and other items, you could donate your property to the foundation so the mountain lion could prosper, these are all possible solutions. By any chance was this BLACK PANTHER.

Being a member of that animal's rights forum has really taken its toll on you, hasn't it, Seth?

I have big plans for those folks I tell you big plans. The first time I tried to join they declined me and I returned the email calling them Thought Racists. However now I am in the door and preparing to stir that big ol pot until they catch me. As for the mountain lion I would try to catch it and then donate it to the animal rights folks if they would kindly get it out of the trailer for me. Just go right in there and get him, he won't hurt you, look how cute he is.....

What ever you do, don't tell them how the old timers used to catch coyotes. They'd take very large treble hooks attached to steel cable, bait them with meat and hang them about 5 ft off the ground. That's just enough so the can't get their front feet back on the ground.

Brutal but effective.

Im pretty sure the snares wont work on the Lion, however it will work on the yotes, and the deer jump over the fence so they dont get caught in the snares too often,

If I were you I would call TexasHeat to come out and show the Lion his famous dance moves, Guarantee that s.o.b. wont come back after that awful sight.
