I was recently at bass pro and saw a hog caller I have never heard of calling hogs in before so I thought I should give it a shot. Have any of yall ever called in a hog before with any sucess? Are there any special techniques to do this? It says I should just breath in and out like the hogs eating. Thanks for your time.

I called one in one time in North Texas near Albany using an open reed predator call. I guess it thought it was a squealing piglet or wanted a quick meal. Hogs will eat anything. It was a sow and my buddy dropped it with a head shot from a .223.

I've tried it w/ no success. I guess a couple times tryin' might not be enough to base my experience though.

There is a good article in the fall issue of Predator Hunting about hog calling. The author, Randy Smith, uses plain old distress calls like you would use for coyotes and bobcats. He says that pig distress calls tend to scare them away, as they don't like confrontation. It also says electronic calls like rodent, small bird and cottontail are the best.

I shot a hog a few weeks ago calling him in by using my deer grunt call. Pulled him right in for the shot. Good luck! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oy6Pe_sgeEo&feature=player_embeddedwww.buckandbassranch.com

I have a Primos hog grunt, I saw it at Gander and thought what the heck, I'll give it a try! Well I actually called in a boar the first time out with it, and once I was doing my best to mimic young piglets and had a bobcat come in from behind me!
That may not have been the grunting but its the first and only time I've had a bobcat come in from behind me on that property.

The Primos hog call uses the same JC Product reed that is used in a predator distress call.

HOGS PREFER TO BE AROUND OTHER HOGS SO ANYTIME YOU CAN MIMIC A HOG OR WHAT SOUNDS LIKE A GROUP OF HOGS FEEDING YOU CAN USUALLY GET THEM TO INVESTIGATE. TO MANY PEOPLE TRY SOMETHING 1 TIME AND DONT HAVE SUCCSESS SO THEY SAY THAT THE PRODUCT OR TACTIC DOESNT WORK, NOTHING WORKS EVERY TIME. I HUNT A PLACE THAT HAS ALOT OF PIGS SO I GET ALOT OF CHANCES TO WATCH THEM INTERACT WITH OTHER HOGS. NORMALLY WHEN 1 HOG CROSSES THE SLOUGH I HUNT ANOTHER WILL COME TO SEE WHAT IS GOIN ON OR IF A HOG IS WOLLOWING MAKING ALOT OF NOISE ANOTHER HOG(S) WILL COME IN. IT IS JUST LIKE CALLING ANY OTHER ANIMAL SOMETIME IT WORKS SOMETIME IT DOSNT BUT IT NEVER HURTS. GOOD LUCK AND ANOTHER THING THAT MAY HELP YOU BOARS ARE THE ONES THAT MAKE THE LONG DRAWN OUT SQUEALS AND SOWS GRUNT AND MAKE SHORT HIGHER PITCHED SQUEALS. BTW I HAVE HAD SUCCESS CALLING IN HOGS WITH THE SAME TYPE CALLS YOU ARE ASKING ABOUT.
