As all of you have probably seen, I have had a running post looking for some place to run a couple of coon dogs. I may not be wording it right, so here is where I need your help.

How could I find a place to run some coon dogs and hunt coon? I really don't feel like it should cost anything to hunt coons, I mean after all...it is aiding the land owner by eliminating or at least thinning the population of varmints.

Like I have said in the previous posts I don't have any interest in deer or hogs or anything but coons. I have a pup and he needs to be in the woods. Please help if you can. Thanks.

That may be your problem right there. Land owners may not want to charge you, but telling them, that it should not cost you is the wrong mind set. It is your hobby, not theirs. Most land owners could care less if they have coons or not, unless they are hunters. If they are hunters, they prob. don't want a complete stranger on their land. You gave them your word, but these days, it does nont mean much. If you get hurt on the land owners land, you could have a civil case against them.
To me its not worth it to let a stranger on my place.

Might get better hunting once deer season is over.
Good luck

I don't run a dog during deer season. Especially since I run Redbones...color is WAY too close to brown and people get trigger happy all over the country.

I'm in the military, as far as getting hurt...my bills are paid.

It may be that I'm from a much different place, but we just don't do the "oh, I was on your place when I twisted my ankle on a rock...you pay."

Where I'm from if you twist your ankle...well then you twisted it. No biggie, no ones fault but your own for not looking where you walk.

Here is a link to my other post. I would never tell someone what to charge me for something, but I have been thrown offers of $600+ to hunt coon. That is outlandish at best to me. I never said I wouldn't pay a dime, but $600 is way to much for what I make a year.

Sir, there are just to many 20 acre places with idiots on them to run dogs anymore. I use to love to run hounds. We didn't kill-em, just ran them up a tree so we could jump them out again. Had some real fine Tree dogs. You might have better luck if you leave the weapon at home and approach it that way. Tell them you want to play them some mountain music. I'm thinking most folks don't want strangers shooting on their place at night nowdays.

There is a lot of pride in having a young dog take a cold trail and tree their first coon. Good luck with your search.

Public land after Deer season. $48 for more land than you can cover.

I called the Department of Wildlife today and they said that there is only one plot that you can run dogs at night on....man I got bummed on that one. =(

I think craige is probably correct. Most folks don't see the removal of coons as a necessity. I know as a land owner that I just don't let strangers on my property let alone with firearms. It's not that I'm not a nice guy, but the liability these day is huge. Its not worth the risk. . One mishap can have many foreseen and unseen consequences. Telling someone that you won't charge them to shoot and hunt on their property is probably the wrong approach. I think if you can get to know some folks (land owners) over a period of time, you chance of hunting will improve.

TexasVine, would you consider letting this man hunt if he were to not carry a firearm, agree to not cut or damage any fence, have no alcohol or beer, and to close any gate they go through?
