Not sure where to put this so I'll stick it here.
I'm heading to south Texas for a hog hunt in a few weeks (a big deal for this Canuck from the frozen northland!) and have an overnight in San Antonio. Any suggestions about restraunts, bars, gun shops, etc. would be very much appreciated. The Alamo and a good Texas BBQ are high on my list. A good place to buy a scope too.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome Brother. My Dad was born in Virden Manitoba. I'm living in San Antonio now and would be happy to hook up with you when you make it down. Shoot me a PM as your date approaches.

Are you staying on the riverwalk?
San Antonio is my hometown. Love it there.

For good Texas BBQ I recommend Home of da smoke. It is 15 minutes east of San Antonio on US 87 but the bbq can't be beat. If you are staying in town I would try the County Line off of I10. For gunshops close to downtown I would try Dury's. They are off of I37 at the Hot Wells exit just a few miles south of downtown. They may be closed on Mondays. Just FYI we have a huge problem with thieves breaking into vehicles. I would hate for your trip to Texas to be ruined by some thief. Please do not leave valuables in your car. Enjoy your trip.

The Liberty Bar, never been there but heard lots of good things about them. They recently changed locations but I just saw it on TV, the bald short guy who would eat Bear Grylls if he had to.
Google it for giggles.

Lemme echo what thegrouse is saying...it's hard to beat the County Line for BBQ and Dury's IS the best gunshop in town...they are definitely closed on Monday's...lemme add though that you need to sample the Mexican quisine in San Antonio...I'd recommend Pappasita's or if Cajun food is a little more to your liking...Pappadeaux's...and don't forget New Braunfels right up the road from San Antonio where I live...we're a German community and we have some great eating establishments up here...Granzin's bbq, The Smokehouse, The Ironhorse Grill(unbelieveable burgers), Clear Springs (seafood), Friesenhaus(German) and then all the stuff in Gruene, including Gruene Hall (Oldest Dance Hall in Texas) and the Grist Mill...enjoy your trip but, like has already been pointed out, don't leave anything in your car you want to keep...

All those above are great. Gruene is a nice little town to check out for a quick bite at the Grist Mill. La Margarita is great near the Riverwalk. If down at the Riverwalk, go have a beer and check out all the mounts and horns at the Buckhorn Museam & Saloon. http://www.buckhornmuseum.com/

Great info. Thanks all.
I'm staying at the Holiday Inn on the Riverwalk and have no vehicle so I'm kinda limited to that area.

As a native I will point you in the right direction.
Since your staying at the river walk, you will be able to soak up quite a bit of history.
the alamo is required, the buckhorn measeum is very neat as well. Both are a must see. If family or small kids are involved, the wax palace or riply's believe it or not are also pretty cool.
As for food, mi terras is hard to beat, as far as mexican food is concerned. the is a small deli called schilo's, it is extreemly cheap and good food, one of my favorites. For seafood go to landrys or the palm...for steak check out bohnams. the cadalliac bar is also good, and it is supposedly haunted, as is the majority of down town is, if your into that stuff. if your doubtful about such matters, around 2 or 3 in the morning go to the alamo toward the left wall and take pics with a digital camera inside the wall, you will catch a ton of floating "orbs" flying around, as well as hear some cool stories from the guards patroling the site.
Nite life can be exciting to bland, depending on where you go. durty nellys' has more of a cheers atmosphere, coyote ugly is probably the most overrated place down town. The dirty monkey is good, the meanger bar is nice if you want a quite place to go hang out..also check out dicks last resort while your there.
Hope you have a safe and enjoyable trip!
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Great info! Awesome. Thanks guys.
One more question....where could I buy a FoxPro Spitfire in San Antonio and about how much would it be? Somewhere along between the airport and south to Eagle Pass. I guess the ranch I'm hunting has a ton of coyotes.

I checked Academy and BassPro's websites and didn't see that model. But then I see a lot of stuff in the stores that isn't on the website. I'd call the SA area Academy stores (at least 4 of them) and the BP off of IH10 and 1604 and ask to speak with someone in the sporting goods depts. Sure miss Sportsmans Warehouse.
Nagel's gun shop has some electronic calls. Not exactly the most organized place, but it's big and if you're going there anyways, you can dig around. They have some to the right of the wall where the black rifles are. They were sitting on the glass case. They also had some in the area where they sell reloading components. The electronic calls are sitting on top of the gun safes to your left as you go back there.
