I would say get on it. I have family and friends in Eagle Pass (not too far from there) that were telling me they have taken some high 150s, 160s and 170s this year. I would call that a great year.

Del Rio is located in the 3rd largest county of the state. Much depends on where that lease is located in the county. Most places there are lots of deer. If those places aren't supplemented, then your average buck will probably be in the 120's. If they have a good wet year or they have been supplemnted for awhile, you have the genetics, most places, to get into the 150's and sometimes above.

Make sure they aren't leasing you part of the Amistad Recreation area. Kidding. There were quite a few deer right next door to Walmart until they bulldozed the brush. They'd be right next to the gas station with cars coming and going.

The only direction from WalMart that I'd be leary of would be the stuff on 90 in that area, west of Walmart. Yeah, there are deer, but way too much development going on, habitat getting detroyed left and right. North on 277/377 should be decent and east and northeast are still fairly good. If access is too good, you could have some poaching going on.

You might want to inquire if that land is anywhere near where they are going to build the loop around Del Rio. Big time construction for a year or more probably won't help it.

Best bet, as usual, would be go see it and ask lots and lots of questions. Deer size should/would probably (and I do not know for sure) 120's/130's if it hasn't been shot out. Overall pretty decent habitat, not all sage like closer to the lake and very few cedars.

That's about all I can tell ya, except Del Rio and east get more rain than the west end of the county. That's normally a good thing.

Yes, it really depends where the lease is. Is you go east or south of town, it hunts like South Texas. Lots of thick brush and creeks. North of town, you get into some huge canyonland and hill country, so you can do a bit of stalking and still hunting.

West of town is probably the worst of the areas (towards Comstock). Much more "west Texas" type terrain and the deer numbers per acre get smaller the further west you go.

Anthrax has been known to flare up on ranches north of town in the past. Just an FYI. Always good to ask the rancher/lessor if they've had signs of anthrax in the past few years.

DelRio is a VERY dangerous place. Not for the faint of heart.

do you mind backing that up with some actual data.
not suggesting you personally have not had a bad experience, but
i have been there many times in the last year and never found it to be anything out of the ordinary when it comes to safety.
i actually went to del rio this week and spent a day in Acuna, Mx doing some work with the churches over there.

still cant see the perspective you are bringing to this post.
i would agree that one can find trouble in Del Rio if you go looking for it, but i cant support a claim that it is a VERY dangerous place.

what is your basis for this claim

Stuff my dad said in the deer blind

"I can dive deeper and come up drier"
"did you do that?"

You will have to be more specific on which part of the county...There is a wide variance in Val Verde county hunting and game wise.

He posted earlier, within about 5 miles of the north end of DR.

Del Rio is a great place to live and Val Verde County hunting is what it is. A good mixture of quality whitetail hunting as several have stated previously. Always problematic North by Northwest, with outbreaks of Anthrax, but if your careful as with anyplace and like big country, it's a great place.
