I've heard the same thing. Don't know for sure if it's true, but it sounds plausible.

Don't know about the freezing thing but they sour after a few good rains.

We sure do WANT it to be true! I don't think so, though.

I own a tree farm and grow live oaks. Acorns survive the freeze to grow in the spring. Most seeds will not germinate unless they spend a certain amount of time at or below a certain temp. Varies with species of plant or tree. This keeps the seeds or acorns from germinating too soon and then being killed by freezing temps. For example warm moist day in late fall. Seed thinks it is spring and germinates. Then the real winter comes along and freezes the tender growth. This kills the plant and ends the life cycle. Which ends the species. So they evolved. If freezes killed acorns we would not have very many oaks. Moisture wont do it nessarly either. Wont get too in depth.

If moisture sours the acorns, then it must not bother the deer much. Even after this wet fall the deer were still eating them... or at least browsing for them.

Worms are what you have to worry about. Dirtymike is correct. If freeze and moisture sours acorns, there would be no trees.....
