Anyone ever seen anything like this in Texas?? Help me out here guys! Back when I was younger we ran a store right near Land Between the Lakes (LBL) in Kentucky and Tennessee. There was an outbreak of bluetongue there, and it killed a buttload of deer...for many years after that the deer hunting in LBL declined significantly. I would really be on the watch for any more deer that may look funny and might even have the biologist come out and do a courtesy look at your deer as they may be able to recognized and treat the signs before it wipes out your "herd".

We lost at least 2 bucks 3 years ago as well to blue tongue NW of San Saba. We have not seen any signs of it since. Both bucks were 5+ mature thought it might just hit the older ones but really we have no idea. It might be they were running together. Ours did not have a tongue that looked like that, one of them was like a balloon.

Odd thing is...by all evidence I've seen, blue tongue is not a "winter" illness. Generally after a good freeze it's nonexistent.

They just went through another outbreak and lost a ton of deer. I don't know if the deer in this thread had it. but I'd want to find out. That stuff is serious bad on a herd.

I'm afraid you're going to see more of this if the state doesn't do more to control the population in some areas of the state. Populations are getting out of hand in rural agricultural areas where no natural predators exist. Extensive crop devistation and increased risk of disease outbreaks will become more common in these areas. Hate to see an animal suffer like that one.

Umm I don't need any more pictures... that one made me sad enough.
Good job on putting her out of her misery and I hope there's no more with that problem!
