I've read alot of bad posts about east texas. Before some of you guys completely discredit east texas all together i thought i would share the results of 14 years of management on a 2400 acre timber property in east texas. I shot the one on the top right. It scored 137 4/8. The big one not on the wall went 162 3/8. The buck by it self was killed this year thats why he isnt on the wall yet. I would put this wall against any low fence south texas lease.

the problem with east texas isn't the habitat or the deer....its the people who hunt it.
alot of the deer that are in east texas got there from transplants from the king ranch...the genetics are there.
if you manage a place that is sizable...such as 2400 acres, you will get nice bucks..you have proven that. it just takes keeping your finger off the trigger to get them there
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Thats one hell of a wall right there!
Sometimes I wonder if it will get to the point you bring an attorney with you out hunting.

I have never seen any paperwork stating King Ranch deer were transplanted here and know alot of the people around East Texas. Not much poaching has been heard of or proven, yes I do check arrest reports from the Sheriff and Game Warden and have not seen anymore incidents than anywhere else. I live and hunt in Hunt county, along with a lease in Wise County and Make 2 trips to Brady during the season. I also have a family farm in Iowa my son and I hunt. Point is, I hunt all over and have not seen any proof that East Texas is any different than anywhere else. There are issues all over. Although everyone can just stay away and believe the stories, more deer for me and mine.

Its is true that deer were transported from south texas to east texas i have read it in multiple articles. i wouldnt know where to find any actual proof though. As far as poaching goes it just depends on where your at just like any other part of the state. I think east texas gets more of a bad wrap simply for the fact that the population in east texas is denser. From personal experience we have had 3 chains and two locks get cut on our place this year alone. So we have had some poaching. They actually arrested the guy they suspected of poaching our property about a mile down the raod poaching another property. The "if its brown its down" mentality is changing for the most part though.

someone has posted the link on here before... it gives a break down of transplanted deer per county dating back to the 40s I believe.

Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

East Texas should have the biggest deer in the state, if for no other reason consistent rain fall, forage, and vegetation. I have a place my cousin and I own near longview. I is an outstanding looking piece of property. I don't hunt it because the scum bag neighbors sneak around and shoot every deer they see year round. I don't live there so it is hard to stop. Poaching is a huge problem in East Texas. If you have a large tract of land and can keep the idiots out the deer on that wall are attainable. And I don't think you will find a prettier area to hunt in. And by the way a guy does not get a wall like that shooting 2.5 year old deer. Great Job!

I don't know anything about East Texas as in poachers but according to everybody it's an issue. I wish there was some kind of link that would be posted about proof of poaching be done there than anywhere else.
Nice get up of bucks man that's awesome.

Years ago when my dad was a Game Warden he had to go over to east Texas to help the wardens there. Every time he would come back he would say to me, "Boy, stay away from there, there are people still farming with sharp sticks."
I have always remembered those words.
Bartender, bring me anything except brake fluid, cause I don't plan on stopping!

East Texas should have the biggest deer in the state, if for no other reason consistent rain fall, forage, and vegetation..... Don't leave out genetics. Obviously in Walker Co they have it. There aren't a bunch of deer like that running through Fannin and Red River Counties. Many of the deer will never make that size, even if they get to be 23.5 Those are great deer, and a great place it sounds like. WOuld love to have a place like that. But short of a moratorium on hunting, it's not likely to happen to the small compartmentalized places in NE Texas.

Nice get up of bucks man that's awesome. Hard to catch them their deer don't see proccesors, In our case its neighbors, they live around the place, they can see when we come and go. One tract we have that has never been leased by us or hunted by us had 3 stands on it 2 years ago. When I was a kid I was sitting on stand near Brushy Creek Texas. Truck eases up across fence, guy checks feeder then checks blind, speeds off. They will say their just looking but doubtful.

I was born and raised here and see no more poaching than I have seen or at least heard off in any other part of TX. I knew a man in my youth that hunted the bar ditch ranch between Eldorado and Iraan on a regular basis. I have seen teenagers in the Panhandle chasing deer across wheatfields. I have only caught one "poacher" on our place in the last 20 years and he was a dude from Garland that had mis read a map and made an honest mistake, after cussing him felt bad and let him grab his deer and get on down the road. Somehow we get this sterotype on being ignorant and backwards, funny stuff.
Talent is a gift, character is a decision.
