I don't use a whistle anymore, cause I couldn't keep it out of my mouth. I mostly just bump them around with the e-collar. I think the whistle will become extinct with the e-collar and the Garmin Astro.

I would rather hear a whistle then hear someone yelling at their dog. (water dogs)

I'm with bmowatt, it gets old hearing someone yell all day. I use a combination or voice, whistle, and e-collar. My collar has a quite tone beep that I use most. The whistle is my voice saver, if he gets out to far or working in thick or high cover I use it so he can keep his bearings. When I'm with a big group of dogs and do use the whistle I usually follow it up with his name (tweet-tweet, Copper)

great info as I am trainig a pup right now... So what is a good DVD/Book that incorporates the e-collar??? Because the books I am useing now came out well before the electronic revolution. And I am a bit leary of using an e-coller without some very detailed instruction, I think you can ruin a dog if not used corectly.

I pretty much use the old Delmar Smith method, and substitute the e-collar for the bump under the chin. I've posted pictures on here several times. Here they are again; I started Cracker on the whoa post when she was 11 months old, on 9/1. I went from the whoa post to heel and whoa in the yard. Cracker wanted to sit, so I used the flank, or suitcase hitch. I went from there to whoa in the field. I first put her on birds with the check cord around 9/1. I didn't have any help so I got out in front of her with the CC around a bush She was completely off the CC on her first birthday, which was 9/7. She's never seen a pigeon, or a launcher. That does not mean that I'm against pigeons or launchers. I just didn't have them.

Although I have a whistle I try to avoid using one when possible. I try to run my dog with hand signals and body language. I think there was even a book or video out on silent handling methods and training. Most dogs will get used to your whistle tone.

I have to agree completely with dogs recognizing the different tones and methods of blowing into the whistle. My 11 month old pointer pup ran in his and my first open puppy field trial this weekend. I did not know that he would run with another dog and hear another whistle for the fist time in his life. At first he ran back to me every time the other handler would whistle. After about 2 minutes, I finally blew my whistle and it was the funnest thing. My dog paused for a second and froze, than he took off in the direction I wanted him to go and totally ignored the other whistle for the reminder of the trial. He even took 3rd place!!! I was really shocked by how he understood the difference in tone and intensity.
