Once you have opened the animal's abdomen you use it like a zipper to cut the skin and membranous flesh up to the chest/sternum.

Be sure to go with the grain of the hair or your hook will be dull soon. It also cuts better that way.

An easy way to sharpen it, Wrap sandpaper around a drill bit, and go at it. Works awesome.

Oh yea, to answer your question. LOL
Once you get a hole cut in the abdomin, install the "hook" in the hole (with the sharp edge facing upwards). Position yourself where you can pull it GENTLY towards where U want to cut. They work great.

Using leather like a strop (sp?) for old straight razors works very well for sharpening, too.

The gut hook works great on any part of the critter, not just guttin. I use it along the legs to split them open. Makes quick work of them.
And insead of the whole sandpaper and drill bit thing.... just get the dremel attachment and put it in your drill. Its a couple bucks and will be a lot more effective. Or a chainsaw file will do.

Yep. That's where they come in handy the most. I always use my fingers to hold the skin up and cut from underneath, but when skinning out, the hook is very handy. I also saw a guy, one time, use a steel ball about the size of a baseball. He peeled the skin back, stuck the ball under the skin, the pushed it around, under the skin. He did a whole Deer muy quick. I wish I knew where he got that ball.

They are also great to cut strips of hide of of a hog. Pull the strips off like when you skin a catfish. I keep mine in my pack at all times with pliers just for hogs. If I kill one deep in the woods I will sometimes just pack out the back straps in a plastic bag. This is hogs only. I would never do this to a deer. Hogs are shoot all on sight. Eat what what you want leave the rest, more are coming.
