Last yr I ordered a rugar staniless 25.06 and have not been happy with the pattern it shoots .I have tried different brands of shells not any difference .3 shots usally takes a fifty cent piece to cover it.My 22 250 has me spoiled it will lay 3 shots with all of them toughing each other.Everything has had the carp tightened out of it and the barrel is not touching the stock. Is there anything that can be done by a gunsmith to help this gun?Darrell

What kind of bullets are you shooting? Factory or handloads? try differnt types of bullets and see what they does. Some guns like some ammo more than others. How about the optics? Is everything sound there?

Try different ammunition and bullet weights. Sometimes the smallest change help the most.

My ruger does not shoot much tighter than that. Are you shooting that group on a sled? I would not think you would get the same group as with a 22-250. My only gripe with the ruger though is the trigger. It's a little heavy which does not help with the kind of groups you want to shoot.Mine is not floated and has a wood stock. I am using a luepold vx 2 on it. You may try to have some hand loads done. Someone who is good will get tighter tolerances on a handload especially with the bullet seating.

Not to ask a dumb question but your not using the ranch version are you? 25-06 does not like a short barrel. Incomplete burn.

Have to disagree with that. Powder is burned in the first few inches of the barrel. A short barrel 25/06 may be loud and may lose a few fps, but it can be very accurate.

The two brands you're using aren't the only name brands out there. Try some federal rounds.

One more thing to try is the torque on the action screws. If the manual doesn't give the proper torque, you could probably do a quick search on the internet to find out what works best for others. Some like 'em tight as can be, others maybe just snug. Might maybe be worth messing with?

Rugers are great guns but every other one shoots differently. My buddy has a varmint model in .308 and it will one hole, but I know another guy with the same gun that will barely hold a 2 inch group at 100. They are really tough rifles but they are pretty hit or miss when it comes to accuracy.

+2. Definately NOT an incomplete burn. Just lots of sound and fury.....

But getting back to the original post, 3 shots covered by four bits seems to be fine hunting accuracy to me. Now, if you're loading for prairie dogs, you'll want better groups. But if you want a deer/pronghorn rifle, that kind of accuracy is more than adequate for field conditions. I doubt 2% of us are good enough field shots to take advantage of better accuracy from a rifle........that is, unless we haul around a benchrest while hunting.

If a stock, sporter weight factory rifle will shoot the first two brands of ammo you try into 50 cent piece-sized groups, you are very fortunate, and have gotten a jewel....can't expect much more, unless you let a good 'smith work it over.

+1, most people should be thrilled to find a factory fifle shooting faftory ammo into groups this size.

Tighter isn't always better. Especially on a wooden stock.

Most factory rifles come pressure bedded: they aren't supposed to fully float and fully floating them will not usually help and might hurt group size.

50 cent piece is what one inch? So you are shooting once inch groups right? Have you considered that the 22-250 is just a more accurate gun?

A nickel is a tad over 3/4" so I am betting a 50 cent piece is closer to 2" than 1"

Johnny

some people like silver and gold
I like brass and lead with a little powder in between

Just sell it, it's not worth the trouble to make it have to shoot accurately! Some are shooters others are just nice to look at. Of course this is assuming the rings are tight and nobody's ammo is perferred.
