With the post in the photo section of the deer that had antlers that looked like drift wood it got me to thinking. Considering all the supplemental feeding, breeding behind closed doors, and how genetics are being messed with do you like the deer with antlers going everywhere. They seem to be more common in recent years.
Let me clarify that I would shoot those deer no questions asked if they presented themselves. But if I had my choice I would rather shoot a big typical deer instead. Dream buck would be a typical 12 point that matched up perfectly. Most of the deer with kickers and points going all over the place are ugly.

I agree! The non-typical deer do have appeal to a degree, but the bucks that look like an ANTLER BOMB went off on their head, I don't really care for. Looks like they've been shooting them deer with steroids and also they look like pets. They are so used to human inter-action that I hardly consider it hunting. Give me a wild-OLD-typical 8 or 10 with mass and I'm happy.

I would love to kill a non-typical. Where I hunt, the norm is the slick 8s and any buck out of the ordinary is one that has something that is a little different. We see more slick 8s than anything else. I want a buck that is really massive or a non-typical. For the most part, I am hunting for a deer that is not there. Too much looking at deer hunting magazines.

my last 2 bucks other than wierd spikes have been 10 pointers. I'd love to shoot a typical 12, a normal buck with a drop tine, or some other pecularity, but those crazy looking 30 pointers are just not that appealing to me. I say that, but I'd definitely waste a bullet and the $350 for a shoulder mount of one happened to stroll by me.

I agree a typical is by far my choice. But I would take the shot on a bizarre racked buck.
Cowdog, you are one hell of a hog hunter, great photo.

190 class clean 8pt is my dream deer that's what I'm hoping for at some point, but would settle for a 160ish" 6pt.

I think the entire concept of scoring an animal based on length of it's tines has fueled a class warfare of sorts in the the hunting world. No longer are people concerned that the animal is a mature one, that it's a challenging kill, that it required more than just a bag of corn and a few hours in a comfy blind. Now they are more concerned about how it will make them appear to their unlearned friends, when they put that mount on the wall of an animal with antlers bigger than any deer that walked on this planet 100 years ago. So, we get excited about the next point gain more than the hunt itself, at least some of us do.
Hell, if I had a couple hundred grand to drop on any deer I wanted, I could be in just about any record book I wanted to be in. It wouldn't make me a better hunter though. As it stands, I feel blessed if I take a doe with a bow from 20 yards. It's meat, it feeds my family and I thoroughly enjoy the pursuit.
It's no longer a deer hunt, but an antler hunt. Too bad we cannot just take the antlers and release the deer.

Too bad we cannot just take the antlers and release the deer. couldnt agree more. i would much rather take a small buck or doe on spot and stalk than a big bruiser standing under a feeder. i prefer typical looking deer over ones with racks like Sudden Impact, poor thing could barely hold his head up. he was growing 6 inches of antler a day at one point... however, i love racks that are mostly typical with a couple kickers here and there to add character.

I also agree. Way too much emphasis on horns these days. Plus it's driven the price on hunting deer way up where good ole hard working guys like most of us can't afford it anymore. I would love to take my son hunting more, but can't afford it. I'm fortunate to have a few friends with some land that let me hunt for free. I know of a lot of deer camps where you are affraid to pull the trigger b/c that deer that is a trophy to you isn't good enough. The other hunters ridicule you then kick you off. What has hunting come to??? I hunt for meat first and foremost. Can't eat the horns. Right. Don't get me wrong, if a trophy buck steps out, I'll down him Lord willing. These mega bucks aren't natural and to me not that pretty. A trophy is in the mind of the beholder. Be happy for the guy who just harvested a trophy in his opinion. Congratulate him, don't rain on his parade.

2nd post and charger hit the nail on the head! I'll shoot does and spikes but that's not what I'm after. I want horns! That being said I eat deer and give the rest to folks that need it. I'm hunting now and it's not for meat. I thin out does and spikes to better the bucks JMO.

drop tines and splits are cool but yes I'm with you I'd rather have a nice symetrical 12 pt than a non-typical 37 pointer
And Yes I would shoot a 37 pt AND have it mounted!!!
