Last weekend, while while watching 2 does a buck was moving my way but gave me slip behind some bushes while reaching for my binos. The does had moved off behind a thick clump of trees and then get a glimpse of him again heading right where the does were located. So I hit the grunt call a couple times to see if he would investigate so I could get a look at him, but when I did all heard was snort after snort and that was the end of that.
So did I grunt at the wrong time? Or was it just one of those things...

Sounds like they caught your scent. I'd watch using it with deer present. It alerts them to where you are and when they investigate it's natural for them to TRY and get downwind from you...

Besides, if they came to every grunt call, all anyone would have to do to kill a deer is to buy a grunt call and blow on it. Sometimes they work and sometimes they do not. Lots of times I will use mine to stop a deer that is walking off if I want a better look or if I am going to shoot it. Like Texas_Hunting_Best said if you blow it and deer are present, they are going to know where you are.

Yeah never blow on it while they are looking your way.

I have brought in 8 different bucks this year using only a grunt call, but once the deer is in sight, i stop immediately. A deer can localize a sound like you wouldnt believe, and you dont want them looking at you, either bring them in blind, or stop them going away from you, but once they have stopped and are alert, dont make a sound.
As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind...Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks--Thomas Jefferson

well i guess im a lil different than yall, i love callin em in real close once they are in sight, if u sit real still, and wind is in ur favor, u can get em real close. which is what i like to do. ive called in more bucks that i SAW chasing does, than i have called bucks out of the brush.
