Dadgum!! That thing has a set of legs on it! Not the most wary of prey, but a great surprise. Let us know how that thing tastes.

Let's see, Haslet's over by Ft. Worth but I got the impression those whistling dux were a southern thing, you shoot that around here or down on the coast?

We have been seeing those pretty often. I always thought they were called Mexican Whistling Ducks.

Dave:

They are around DFW, but I am in the same boat as Cable. Never seen one on a hunt.

Down here we call them Mexican whistling ducks. I can shoot a limit of them at will, but dont cuz someone told me they don't eat well, but i may take one this yr and try for myself.

I shot a limit of them 2 years ago and they tasted as good as a mallard.

They are every where. I've got 12 that stay around my house and I live in town. I've seen some groups when scouting.

They taste as good or better than other puddlers in my opinion. We usually shoot several every year at a more southerly location.

i have also heard that tree ducks/whistling ducks make very good table fare... i haven't shot any yet, but i met some folks at the boat ramp last weekend that had 4... they're definitely around N TX right now.

Yeah, tree ducks, folks call them a lot of things, but the proper name is a Black-bellied Whistling Duck

You also have the Fulvous Whistling Duck, but the one posted is a Black-bellied..

Yep those birds are all over the coast and west houston. You can hear them whistling from several hundred yards away. We always let them fly right by.
