This will most likely raise some eyebrows, to say the least. After returning to Sheffield from San Antonio about midnight last night, I have come to the following conclusion.
I think that the state of Texas should legalize "road hunting". Perhaps this would remove all the deer from the highway and right of ways in the state. No more squashed bambies and tore up vehicles. The state could charge extra for a license to do so. It could be a lot cheaper than a deer lease, which would allow more people to partake of the sport. I see lots of advantages. I did not hit one tonight, but many others did. Ok, I am ready for all comments and this will be my only one concerning this matter.

Maybe so Chivo but it won't happen. Most of the collisions are at night.

Wouldn't help, the deer would still get stupid this time of the year regardless.

State ought to lease hunting rights by the mile on roadways. Probably would add huge dollars to their budget. Cars are getting lighter and more flimsy and deer more numerous on roads. We got to do something at some point or insurance is going to get impossible.

Naw, just legalize Marijuana.

All those ranches will have pot feed plots.
Deer eat it.
Deer now too laid back and mellowed out to go anywhere, do anything, much less run across roads.

Safety issues will never allow it. It would only lead to giving hunters and hunting a black eye. As metioned in one of the reponse to your post, deer and car accidents occur mostly at night when Whitetail hunting is not allowed. There are quite a lot of deer related fatalities in the states. One of the news networks ran a show on this subject (Deer/Auto deaths) a year or two ago. Funny enough, the majority of the deaths were caused by people trying to avoid hitting the deer then hitting a fixed object or another motorist. I always remind myself and and my wife that if a deer jumps out, just hit it. We spend a great deal of time in the Fredericksburg area and there are a lot of deer out near or on the roadways at night. Fortunatley, most of the deer in the area are small. I am always amazed how they don't even flinch when you drive by within feet of them.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Are you nuts? I will take my chances with hitting a deer thank you very much! I'm not too crazy about seeing a bunch of idiots riding in the back of a pickup truck shooting at deer in front of them and across the oncoming traffic. No thanks!

A big doe was run over on my neighborhood street last night. Speed limit is 35mph. I had a nice 15" buck in my back yard before dark last night. The deer are taking us over.
