I have noticed that when many people are hanging deer to be feild dressed that they hang them head up (from the neck). I have always hung the deer upside down from the rear legs. Is there any advantage to hanging the deer head up?

I have always hung head up weather it be hanging from the antlers, or on a gambrel from the front legs.
Seemed to be easier to cut and let fall, then dig out from hanging butt up.

I always hang with head down, have never seen anyone do it any other way. Suppose it wouldn't really matter though.

If you hang-um up by the neck it makes it easier to peel-em using your truck!

They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason! nidea

How can you cape with the head up ? I have never had one worth doing it but when I do (like Saturday AM???) I had presumed I would hang head down......

To cape a deer you should hang head down. If you are just gutting, hang head up....the guts fall out much easier.

If we are talking field dressing here I always do mine laying in the back of the pick up or on the ground. I never understood how guttin one would work hanging.

If I skin one out I hang them by the hind legs.

Same here. The sooner you gut them the better they'll taste. Waiting until you get them back to camp is too long, particularly in the early season when it's so warm.

Whatever you were taught and are comfortable with is the right way. I was taught to field dress on the ground, then hang by the neck to skin. I'm pretty dang efficient. My father-in-law hangs them upside down to skin. Another buddy field dresses, skins quarters all while the deer is hanging. In the end, there's deer meat in the cooler.

Yeah unless were caping a nice buck out we always hang ours up by the neck. We dont have to worry about guttin them in the woods since we hunt a fairly small place and they are usually hangin up within 30 mins. tops! Our awesome landowner also made us a nice cleanin shed so we could get out of the weather and it has a crank winch in it so you cant beat it!

I gut it in the field on the ground. Then hang head down to skin and quarter.

we have always hung them by the hind legs.. (have had to get live weights and dressed weights for the longest). I would think hanging one by the head would make it a PITA to cape.

No difference at all just preference. If you hang them tail up, the chest cavity holds the guts better than hanging by the head.

Be kind with your words, thankful to your Creator and generous with the meat from your hunt.

This can be done head down too. Like taking off your sock!

Before we started keeping records of live and dressed weight on all our deer we did not gut them. We simply hung them up by the back legs, skinned them and took the deer apart. You have to open up the gut area around the hams a little bit to get at the tenderloins but thats it. No mess that way.

We dont gut them either, hang then by the back legs and quarter them then get back strap and what ever else is good. Drop in a big ol ice cooler for disposal. Oh put the rest in a good cooler.
