Well, the 2nd annual duck season opener was a success. Unlike last year, we actually managed to shoot a few birds! Headed out Friday night to do a little camping before the big hunt in the morning. Met the guys around 9:30 on Friday night, bull shitted for a while and enjoyed the campfire. For some reason Boone thought it would be a good idea to get a "head start" on our spot, and that we shoud go out and sleep in our lay-out blinds that night just to make we didn't lose our spot to someone else. Let me tell you right now, don't ever try and sleep for an extended period of time in those things. Not the most comfortable thing in the world to say the least.

Anyway, to the hunt...we ended up setting up the dekes too far away from us Saturday morning which lead to missed opportunites early. As the day progressed the birds tended to cooperate more and we managed to squeeze out 11 birds. Steady streams of singles and doubles until about 9:00, which made it exciting. Could not have asked for better weather!

5 widgeon drakes, 2 widgeon hens, 3 gadwall drakes, and 1 bluebill.

Me in the layout blind.

Sunday morning hunt we reconfigured the setup to make sure that everything that would commit to the decoys would be within shooting range (why didn't we think of that the first time?). It worked out great. We had two very large groups (15+) decoy directly on top of us early. Unfortunately, that was about it. The faucet turned off just as fast as it had turned on. We did manage to get 9 birds though.

Thanks guys for a great weekend!
