I need some advice or some plans for a cheap, but effective hog trap. We have a huge problem right now with the dang hogs rootin up our pastures and keeping the deer away from the feeders. We haven't been able to shoot any during the day and don't want to spotlight at night because we don't want to mess up the hunting. Does anyone have the plans for an inexpensive hog trap? Or want to build one and sell it for cheap?? Please let me know. Any advice or help will be very appreciated.

Depends on what you are looking for.
I can build you a good, quality trap that will last a lifetime, easy to set, and easy to get the hogs out of after they are trapped/killed.
Can get it built cheaper then any of the other traps without sacrificing quality. In fact the quality of our traps are far superior to some of the other more expensive traps.

If they are keeping the deer away, they are already messing up your hunting (I would use a spotlight). If the times are correct on your camera, you have a lot of corn on the ground at 18:57 (either deer aren't eating much, or hogs are scaring them). Use the info on your game cam, and get a few guns out there at the same time and let em have it. I think trapping will take a bit longer than shooting em.

being that pictures are dark i can't tell, do you have bull wire panels around your feeders? I don't know how many feeders you have, and if this would be practical?

You have a good point though, the deer already aren't coming to that feeder. it might be smart to just spotlight a couple nights and blast em!

A guy I know has some stands where the hogs will come in and scare off the dear. He has installed a bull wire fence around those feeders. My guess is he cuts the panels down the middle, so they are a 2-2 1/2 feet tall. Two or three panels on the ends, and maybe four on the sides (far enough away so that hogs cant get any of the corn that is thrown). This has been pretty effective at those stand.
Where is your place at? We are having the same problems as you with them rooting around and tearing the place up. Our farm is just outside of Taylor, Tx.

if your place is big enough, talk to your friendly neighborhood dog hunter, there's more of us out there than you'd think, and most of us work for free, which is less than the cost of a trap. If that's not an option, you can build a figure 6 trap out of some cattle panels and t-posts or trees for not a ton of money. either way, good luck with your hog problem.

We are hunting in Weimar, TX (between San Antonio and Housont on I-10). I think we might end up doing the figure 6 trap with some cattle panel. That can't be too expensive, plus won't take too much time and effort.

Yeah you can deff rig one up if you plan on just getting rid of them.
Look at the pics I posted in my first post, it will give you an idea of a cheap, temp trap.

I'd blast em at the feeder, and then put up a trap if that doesn't work. If you put up a trap near the feeder and trap some, you probably won't have any dear coming in to that feeder. I would do pins to keep them away from the feeder!

Is the figure 6 trap work anything like this?

I have always heard that there needs to be a floor in hog traps so they cant get out. Is this true? Also, how does the trap door work? And where are yall located, I am in Rockwall and I see you are in Rockwall county. Do you think we could meet up somewhere if I decide to buy one from you.

Nope, not true at all. Actually hogs are sometimes less likely to enter a trap if there is something on the ground that they are not familiar with. We ran traps for a while with bottoms and could see signs they were around, but were not catching them. Cut the bottoms out of them and they started hitting the traps. That was 5 years ago and we have not looked back. If you shoot them in the trap it also makes it 100x easier to remove them. You just lift the trap over the hog rather then trying to climb through a small gate and dragging a big, nasty, hog back through.
They deffinately need to be staked to keep them from lifting them up, but they will not dig out. The biggest loss in traps is due to them rooting the doors open. This is why we add the extra tubing under the door and the angle at the door jamb. This prevents them from getting the door open.
We are in east Rockwall county, down 276. If you decided you wanted one, I could load it up in the truck and bring it into town.

Start shooting them! Your deer are not comin to the feeders as it is. Put panels up around your feeders and put traps up to catch them in. To manage them your gonna have to put in time and use multiple tactics.

trust me, spotlighting at night will not mess up ur hunting. ive been on more night hunts than i can count, we will tear up a pig shooting 30 pistol shots, shine the light a lil farther over, and have big bucks standing there looking at us, then they go back to eating. DEER DONT JUST PACK UP AND LEAVE!

We ran dogs at my old lease that was ate up w/pigs. We ran the dogs right after deer season and then in the middle of Sept maybe a few times in between. Remember that some young dogs may chase deer so, know who your bringing out there, older more seasoned dogs will not mess with the deer. I know some people will also pay you for the pigs they catch.

I agree get someone with some real hog dogs(season dogs just hunt hogs) and deer will stay and hogs will move on for awhile.They always come back but the more pressure on them will keep them gone.

Yup. stress to whoever you get that you want trash broke dogs on there if you're worried about the deer. broke dogs will not run deer, cattle etc. If you have doubts, ask to go along with them before you give them free rein on your place. If they're willing to take you, you should be in the clear. If not, you may need to ask some questions.

A friend of mine described to me how the trapper that works with the local Extention office makes his traps. He uses stock panels that he forms into a semi heart shaped carrel. He starts by setting 4 T-posts to form a funnel with the ends of the panel sticking past the posta about 2 feet and having a 4" opening. This works like a squeeze shoot. He cut off the outside bar and leaves the points sticking out to stop the pigs from bushing back out. Bring the othe two ends of the stock panels back awound to form the pen with the funnel facing in and connect them. Set the T-posta on the outside of the carrel. You can make this pen as big as you want depending on the number of panels you use. He swears that it will catch the whole bunch from the big bores to the little piglets. Since you are not using a box and no door slams once one pig goes in the rest of the bunch will follow. If a deer goes in it can just jump out so you will not be hurting any deer.
