I am curious what everyone does in the stand( I don't mean with a woman or such, thats a different forum ) How do you occupy your time. If your like me you stay up there all the time. I read alot. I hear guys listen to the radio tv eat or sleep. I would think most of those are kinda bad for hunting. Unless your way up. Even then if you are looking at a 150 yard shot the wind blows wrong it can get down there . Just curious how others pass the time

Not much I can do in the bow stand, maybe some music. In the condo stand (rifle) I can do pretty much anything, watch movies, read magazines, sleep.

I try to watch and listen as much as possible, but truthfully, I catch up on my reading. Hunting season is one of the only times that I'm able to find for pleasure reading and I take full advantage. Try not to get so absorbed in the book that I miss anything...

Try books by local texan author Ben Rehder, great reading for the deer stand. I'm like you best peacefull reading you'll ever get.

Finished my book on Jaquin Jackson(One Ranger), I started another book(Tin Collector). Last week, hmmmmmmmm fell asleep Fell asleep as a small herd of deer wouldn't come to the feeder. Woke back up, and they were there again. Sleeping aint good fer ya, at least not in the blind.

I try to remain as quite as possible, catch short cat-naps and pay very close attention to my surroundings. I've found that closing my eyes and regulating my breathing,(sorta like meditating), and concentrating on every sound I hear, even the smallest ones, I can detect the sounds of deer better than just listening.

>>> I'm becoming one with nature, understanding my place in the scenario. This enables me to blend-in and be totally undetected by the wildlife in the area.

Hunting is more to me than Antlers on the wall. It's more about the memories you make, and sharing those memories with friends, and family.

So I take it by most responses that you guys are alone in the stand?? I'm fixin to go down to the Kingsville area for my first deer hunt and the owner's son asked if I wanted to sit in a stand by myself or join him in another one... I told him I preferred to sit in one all by my lonesome. Comments??

I read a lot, being sure to check my surroundings when I turn the page. I like to listen to football games on my Walkman, too. I've even written a couple of hunting stories for publication while in a stand.....Dave

I too am going on my first hunt and will be in a stand alone. My buddy is putting me in a great spot so he says and I hope to be lucky. I haven't thought about what I am going to do up there. I guess reading is popular. How many hours before sunrise do you get up in the tree? I am planning on being up about 3 hours before sunrise.

ON those days in the bowstand when nothing is happening, I have a small, soundless yahtzee game. Got it as a stocking stuffer and took it to the bowstand once. I roll the dice, look around, do it over and over again, til I see movement and slip it into pocket. It helps pass the time on some hunts of just boredom. It comes out every now and then, but I have a high score of 370 which is only with two yahtzees...LOL

well arn't we an educated bunch. reading and writing plus getting one with nature. I think half the fun of hunting is getting some time alone to read and watch etc. I like hunting with others but I really like being up there looking around and reading. Even if some young does or so come in I glass them and just watch, kinda cool.

During bow season I have a silent Texas Hold'em Poker game that I play. I do the same thing as Bradbury. When I see something I just put it in my pocket and get ready.

When in the gun stand I have a small handheld TV that I use earphones with to watch football games on, listen to my walkman, read my two year old Texas Trophy Hunters Magazine, or play my son's Nintendo Game Boy.

I don't do any of this if I am seeing deer though. If deer walk up I put down whatever I am doing and start looking for the bigger deer in the background.

Suprising how many people rely on outside activities to bide the time and distract themselves from the scene around them.
The way I see it I can read/play games/sleep at home or back at camp for that matter. I spend my weeks in a bustling city surrounded by the constant stress of over-crowded humanity. When I get a chance to escape it and spend some time in the stand I find it a welcome break to immerse myself in the surroundings. Taking in each and every sight and sound, subtle shifts in the wind, observing various wildlife regardless of the species is usually more than enough to consume my attention. I can't recall the numerous times another animal has alerted me thru its actions to an approaching deer. To each his own, but to distract yourself from the splendor around you and possibly miss a moment or opportunity is something I try not to do.

That's just about what I said. Nature itself is enough to keep me occupied.

I do agree, about 2 months ago I was in the blind to see what was comming to the food plot and when. Not much came except for a 2 doe with there fawn. Started raining pretty hard and the fawns just went running around having the time of there lives. I think if yuo take thing to help occupy your time then you are more likely to stay longer. I am always first out and last in. No-one bothers me anymore they know I stay out long

Well Said! I hunt to get away from the electronics etc. My rifle and binoculars are as Hi-Tech as I want to get! If I'm going to read I concentrate on reading and do it in camp or at home. I want to enjoy the Great Outdoors.

Just my $.02.

I call/rattle or whatever to keep me focused in the stand do it about every 15 minutes or so. Works pretty good and have had many a buck come in to the calls.
