Well yes you can be suied if they step on it, you can also be suied for false imprisonment if you hold them at gun point, you can be charged with kidnaping if you remove them from one spot to another on your property even if they are a tresspassing, you can be suied for looking at them cross eyed and yelling (harassment).
yeah your better off just selling the place....NOT!
Each time they enter they are breaking the gate...which would be breaking and entering if im not mistaken, and they can come after you for putting up a gate that damaged their truck!
The camera idea will work...It did for me check the photo section for "game cams...not just for deer" (caught my roomates BF comming into my room.) But with you being gone its likely they will steal it to.

Sorry officer, I did not know that board with nails was there. Must of fallen off the other folks truck that broke in last month.
And you better believe I will hold you at gun point if I find you on my property. If you even wink at me wrong I would take that as a threat and defend myself and my property.I got kicked out of kindergarden as a kid.... Why cause I dont PLAY! The way I see it bad things happen to bad people.

Trail cams work great, we had a local trespassing on our lease hunting and the trail cam got him. He got so close at one point we could read his name tag on his work shirt, tell the brand of rifle and read the brand name on the knife hanging on his belt. We knew how it was and took the picture to the Sheriff office and filed a complaint for trespassing. The printed copies of the pictures and then went to pay him a visit to issue a trespass warning, when the deputy showed him the pictures the deputy said the look on his face was priceless. Quess he'll either quit or be more carefull this year and try to find the cameras and take 'em when he trespasses.
If we always do, what we have always done, the we always get, what we have always gotten! Learn to adapt!
