Had a group of about 8 to 12 fly over my car on the road west of Alvord last year but haven't spent much time out there yet this year

I have been hunting the LBJ lands for 10 years, here is the bad news, the turkey population on the grasslands has steadily decreased for the last 6 years! I hunted probably 20 days last spring and NEVER got a bird to respond to a call and only actually saw two jakes! I have talked to the biologist from the NWTF that lives up there and they said that the large population of coyotes and stray dogs have decimated the bird population as well as the drought and fire ants! I stopped and talked to a rancher that has two huge pastures that border the grasslands i would sit and watch 6-8 toms strut in his fields every spring, he has deer feeders up and told me he has not seen a turkey in months!!!! I have also called and talked to my friend at the NWTF headquarters in South Carolina and asked them if it would be possible to re-start the stocking program on the LBJ unfortunately they said no.....

We have plenty north of there in Montague but the predator population is crazy sometimes. Freaking yotes are everywhere but I have yet to see a yote climb a tree and eat a roosting turkey. But cats will.

I saw a group of about 20 picking through a freshly plowed under field near one of the northeastern units yesterday morning.

Hunting in Shackleford Co. took a nice tom last week with my bow. We are seeing plenty however we are on a large creek in dense oaks.

You saw a WHAT? How do you know the Lion was sick? and are you sure it was a mountain lion? They are VERY VERY elusive and rarely ever seen by humans in the wild here in Texas.......

I was there last Saturday and during Thanksgiving weekend. I have not seen a bird this fall. Thanksgiving weekend just too many deer hunters for the 4 day anterless season. I believe others are right population is down. Probably Coyotes fireants all the above. I personally think they ought to give LBJ a rest next year and see if there is some recovery. I do see a few tracks occassionally but nothing near what was seen in the spring.

I spoke with LBJ Biologist 3 weeks ago and they are planing on doing some MAJOR controlled burns throughout the majority of the grasslands this spring! They are going to start in early March. This will greatly enhance the habitat for both the quail & the wild turkeys....

Yes but if you hunt I night I think you need to notify the office and you cannot use a rifle.

all of the LBJ grasslands are SHOTGUN ONLY, but you do not need to notify anyone before you hunt......

I maybe mistake but I thought if you hunting at night you were suppose to give the courtesy call to the game warden.

As a former Hunting ranch manager there is NO LAW that says you HAVE TO call the game warden if you are hunting at night. It has always been a suggestion. As far as the LBJ grasslands go I am pretty sure they DO NOT allow spot lighting of animals at night...
