270 wsm has better ballistics then the regular 270
300 about the same.
biggest thing is the shorter action meaning quicker and shorter overall gun w/same length barrel

I reload and for me the .300wsm means less powder for the same ballistics as the 300 win mag. the down side is the 300 win mag probably has a broader range of bullet weights to choose from while the WSM is about maxed out at 180gr bullets. the WSM cartridges are supposed to be more efficient in their use of the powder due to sharper shoulder angles but I'm no expert. I've shot the 300wsm and win mag and could not tell a significant difference in recoil but the wsm's are advertised as having a lighter recoil. who knows? the short actions make for lighter rifles and quicker cycling.

i've shot both the .270 wsm and the .300 wsm, and can't really see the benefit of owning a .300 wsm vs. a .300 win mag.
i could see if people bought them in lighter rifles like a model 7 but then they would kick the crap outta ya. one of our hunters had a real light browning a-bolt prolly in the 6 pound range and that thing was a chore to shoot.
most of the hunters I see that buy them but them in full size rifles anyway.
Really I think it was a ploy to get rifle makers to sell more rifles. there isn't a caliber that can be invented now that is substantially better than anything already out there as far as performance on game is concerned.
take the .300 RUM for example...everyone was singing its praises as the ultimate .30 caliber cartridge, except roy weatherby invented the .30-378 a long time before it.
the .270 wsm is an improvement over the .270 win but not the .270 wby mag.

WSM ammo (if you don't reload) is usually more expensive and can be sometimes harder to find......., you'll never run into that problem with the good 'ole .270 Win., .308, 30-06, or 300 Win Mag. The quicker cycle time advantage......? Is it really that much faster to cycle a bolt that's maybe a half inch shorter in a hunting situation?

Clark or anybody, I reload and never look at box price. How much higher are the wsm and wssm running than wm. roughly
One less round in magazine.

There is a school of thought that shorter action rifles are inherently more accurate than longer actions. I don't think I'm good enough to tell the difference, in fact I know I'm not. For a hunting rig, if the .073 smaller group would determine whether I bag a moose or not, I probably shouldn't be shooting at the moose in the first place. (lol) I looked long and hard at the 300WSM when it first came out but could never justify it. It filled a gap that wasn't there in the first place.
Edited to add: Now, If I were starting out and building a collection from scratch I might have looked at them more seriously. But already having the bases pretty much covered from .22 to .300WM, I didn't see a use for it.

I agree with slow drifter. WSM's don't really fill a gap at all. If you already have a 300 win mag there isn't any sense getting a WSM. when I bought mine it was btwn the 30-06/300wsm/300win mag. btwn the M1 carbine, 30-30 and 300 wsm I've pretty much got 30 cal covered. I don't really buy into that faster cycle time either. who cares? If I can use a third less powder to get the same performance, that's the round I'm gonna get in any caliber.

Hey, if the companies didn't come out with a few new calibers every few years, we'd all still be shooting our grandfather's 7x57mm mauser, his 30.06, or his 303 British. A good gun never wears out, it gets passed down father to son to grandson. No need to buy an new one unless they can convince us that they have something newer and better. Thus, all the new calibers in SAUM, WSM, etc. Just a marketing gimick to get us to shell out some more money that we really should have to. That said, anyone out there got one of those new 300 WSM's for sale?

I have a 7mmwsm, a 300wsm and 223wssm here is the real deal. One of my good friends shot 1000 yard competition for years. A belted magnum stretches and is accurate for a few firings. This is due to head spacing from the belt, while a wsm head spaces from the bolt. The reason I bought them is when you reaload you can completely resize the case, the belted magnum stretches and grows in lenght. A shot fat case like a 22ppc are some of the most accurate case designs. I have been mule deer hunting and practice at 500 yds plus. If you are wanting accuracy a shot mag is the only way to go. You really need to reload to save money now a wsm once you have the brass it is cheeper to shoot.

It is a decision don't really regret until I need ammo. Variety for factory loads is nowhere near that of a .270 Win. I wouldn't buy another WSM, the PITA factor is too high.

With the exception of the 270 WSM, a short action and a whole bunch of hype is the only difference.
The 300 Win Mag can still be handloaded FASTER than the 300 WSM with ALL bullet weights. In factory ammo they are basically identical.
Same with the 7 WSM and regular 7 mag.
The 270 WSM is the only one thats actually faster than its long action counterpart, factory or handloaded. But the 270 WSM also kicks noticably more than a 270 Win. IMO so the extra speed comes at a price.
I've seen more than one guy buy a 300 WSM in a light rifle because, "winchester and so and so gunwriter said it kicked less" only to find out a 6.5 lb 300 kicks the S*&T out of you whether its WSM or 300 Win Mag.
That said I don't have anything against the WSM's just don't tell me they are faster (except the 270) and kick less.
In fact I have a 325 WSM and really like it.

If you want a big difference in mag vs reg Buy a Weatherby Mag (but get a part time job to pay for the ammo)or reload like me
What kind of lights does it shoot out? Like are we talkin the mini bulb Christmas lights or a 500 watt flood light?

i have had several wsm's but have gone back to the trusted 30/06 and 300 win mag. main reason is i can find ammo anywhere and usually alot of it.

The standard belted due to their case capacity will shoot the heaver bullets faster. The point is if you reload they will give you the same results with less powder and cost. I have owned a 7mm mag, 300win mag and I sold these. The 7mm wsm is faster than any of my corona graphed 7mm rem mad load with 140 grain bullets. On texas white tail or mule deer there is no reason to put up with the recoil. Any standard caliber 25 call or greater will kill both. I like flat shooting cartridges and bullet combinations so take game at normal ranges. The shot mag will shine at medium to long ranges.
