A large barge crashed into the Pelican Island Bridge in Texas on Wednesday, causing a section of the bridge, including railroad tracks, to smash down onto the barge, Fox 7 Austin reports.

Pelican Island is located north of Galveston and is connected to the city by the bridge.

Officials say the bridge has been shut down to traffic in both directions.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Only Aggies would put a school on an island with only one way to get there.

Henry says the collision caused oil to spill from the barge, which has a capacity of 30,000 gallons, although it is unclear how much of it went into the water.

Considering it’s Galveston Bay, would anyone even notice a little bit of oil in the water?

Thanks,
Rich

Food processing plants, energy infrastructure, bridges, several hundred thousand Chinese nationals over the border. Yeah, it's all a coincidence.

Spot on....more intentional wickedness I would imagine.

That bridge is at the very end of Galveston Harbor and the currents traveling through that squeeze point have historically been very swift during tide changes. With all the rain in the area recently the San Jacinto River and Houston ship channels are releasing a large volume of water exacerbating the tidal effects. The oil dock that barge was loaded at is very near the bridge and any movements at that facility should be planned to be performed as near as possible to slack tide as a best practice. I have seen numerous close calls there when operators do not monitor the tides close enough.
