I was on my way to buy motor oil and a filter Sunday morning and as I was passing the former TXU plant, I was looking at the field and I see what I thought was a turkey… I made a u-turn to check it out and I stop on beltline to check it out… Sure enough, it's a nice lookin gobbler with a good beard… I called at it with my mouth, but I couldn’t hear him respond, but the way he was looking, I know he heard me…
Coppell police pull up behind me, I pull away - praying he didn’t pull me over. When we get to the light, I told him there were turkeys in that field… I go home and get the box call. I go back to the power plant… One of the birds is still out there so I drove up the power plant entrance road, turn around and park in front of the bird, kill the engine, and start calling it with the box call. It was responding to it, when the same cop pulls up behind me - he'd driven back to the plant to find the bird - LOL.
Turns out he was an avid turkey hunter… He gets out with binoculars and says "do you see the bird?" The bird had layed down, I could only see the top if it's head at about 150 yards… Another Coppell police car pulls up - they both get out and say "where's the bird?" two minutes later, those cop's superviser pulls up and says "what's going on? I heard you tell these two to come over, and I wanted to see what was going on…" LOL!!
So now there are 3 police car, 4 cops and me standing there watching the bird while I called it. One of them was snapping pictures…
After they all left, I sat in the back of the truck calling it and I got it to come up to the chain link fence… At one point I had him within shooting distance… I tried to walk up on him, and when he saw me, bolted…
It was still pretty fun just to get the calling practice and to see such a nice looking bird in the middle of the city.
Crappy cel phone pic will be coming up shortly... When you see it, there is a speck in the middle of the pic - that was the turkey...
