what that means is we have lost 4,500+ points, in dollars that equates to I believe just over 2 trillion dollars. I think the market is responding to obame possibly becoming president with all his cronies still in congress. The mortgage meltdown is just another scapegoat, it is a big tangent but it isn't the problem it is a symptom of the sickness.

...and the only thing that can be said about where the market will be in one more year is: No one knows.
The long term trend of the New York Stock market judged by the Dow Industrials is that over the long term the market has always gone up and has always beat inflation.
Do you remember it was just during the time of Reagan that the market went over 1000.

Yes but the paradigm today is different with all the folks who are reliant on their investments for their retirement and cannot replace that foundation that they are living on, we didn't have that issue with the market during Reagan's watch. You are correct about the market going up and down but with the greying of America with the baby boomers this market is different cause they cannot replace the loss. I assure you that if it is obame in the presidency it will be recession, one much worse than the eighties, cause they will tax us right into it full speed. What we see is the market responding to that possible reality.

I agree. If Obama is elected and he institutes his stated policies then we will have more of a 1930's economy than the 1980's.

It surely does have the potential of going there, and our Nation is just foolish enough to believe we are invincible. There is not a military in the world that can take us, there is not an economy that can touch us, but our greed and stupidity and politcally correct attitudes will defeat us. The best advice I can give you is to pray to God for guidance and spend some time in His living word the bible each day. God is in control, he expects us to be good stewards with all the blessings He provides, look at how we have been stewards of the all the many blessings God has provided to our nation.
We have looked like this for too long
We need to be like this

God told me to go 100% stocks or to enjoy working until I am 90. Atleast he gave me two choices.

Seth-are you going through a metamorphosis??? Your recent questions are making me think too much lately.
Lets go back to the days of shooting deer with a .22 roadside at night in East Texas!!!

The real issue is not where the market was last year, but where it will be in another year. We may soon be dreaming about 9,000. If you need any cash in the next 5 years sell now.

I went to cash two days ago. My wife went yesterday. Yep, I locked in some losses but believe that I will have the opportunity to buy in cheaper.
An old saying is to sell at the point of sleeping. If it keeps you awake nights, get out.

Being 26 years at least from retiring I just can't see myself selling but we all would have at 12K to 14K if we knew. Overall I am 40% to 50% stocks so that is pretty conversative from an allocation standpoint at my age and they are all mutual funds in 401K and IRA so I couldn't touch it if I did sell. I have other stuff doing well so it does balance out at least.
