I got nothin'
      #537972 - 10/06/08 06:52 AM

but another hunt under my belt.
I just started bow hunting after Christmas last year, and only managed to take one trip with the bow at that. I'm determined to get some meat on the ground with my bow this season, and hopefully before gun season opens. I went to the lease this weekend and intended to come back after the hunt Sunday morning. I decided to stay and hunt last night. I was glad I did, but pissed at the same time. I got in the stand at about 5:15. At 5:30 two yearlings showed up. I got a glimpse of a doe back in the brush and was watching for her to come out into the clearing. As I see a deer making its way through the brush, I realized it was a little sticker 6pt. About the time he got settled in, the doe went to blowing and the yearlings hauled out of there. The 6pt. left too, but he came back after just a minute.
About an hour later, 5 doe came in from my right. I saw them coming, almost at a trot. 4 of them circled down-wind and one was coming in on a trail that crosses directly in front of the stand. I clipped my release on the string and just as I was starting to pull back in anticipation of her clearing the brush, the other four winded me, blew and they all headed for the hills!!!
The little buck left and returned 3 or 4 times before dark.
I was amazed at the whole wind thing. Saturday morning I had 5 deer feeding under me for just over 2 hrs. The wind would blow from my back directly at them and they didn't seem to care a bit! In the evening though, I had deer bust me both evenings when they got down-wind before coming in. I showered with the scent free soap both evenings and did everything else the same as the morning hunts.
Sorry 'bout the long read, but I'm hooked!

If it makes you feel any better, I got schooled by hogs and a coyote this weekend.

The best (and the worst) part of the hunt was hearing this big old sow squealign her [censored] off at something about 50 yards away. She sounded HUGE! I felt like a kid with only four cents at the nickel candy store.

Just keep at it Tim, it's going to happen. Nothing for me yet either, maybe this week.

Did you take a shower and use a scent blocker before the evening hunt? You may have smelled a bit less fresh.

Thought I answered that question already, but I see it didn't take. Showered with HS Scent free, sprayed clothes with Dead Down-Wind and sprayed Fitgerald's Deer Dander on my boots? Oh, almost forgot, used the HS scent free deoderant too!

Doe and her babies. I know, I know....after all the blowing and spooking she's done now, she may have earned herself a dirt nap. She and another doe that had a little one with her were really skinny. Every doe in the group that had five in it (that never made it in to my shooting lanes) looked a lot better weight wise. I guess the yearlings have just been dragging the other two down. The young 'uns were still trying to suck on the doe!

That is bow hunting. Everything must be perfect. With a gun you see the deer - band - dead deer. Bow hunting takes talent. Keep it up, you are there.
