Spike question
      #537903 - 10/05/08 10:50 PM

I hunt in a 1 buck county, an we have a very tall spike that this is the 2nd year I have seen him. Not wanting to use my tag on him what do you do in a case where you have this problem?

If you can invite a friend to hunt, let him or her shoot it. If a guests' kill is counted towards your limit, you may be able to convince the person in charge of your lease to make an exception. Other wise you may have to take it, just to keep it from breeding?

Thats a personal decision. I used my buck tag on a spike I knick named "the bull" and had no regrets......matter of fact he's european mounted cause he was so impressive. Let him go another year, he may surprise you.

That's the only thing I like about being in a AR county now. Now I can get 1 more deer in the freezer.

You probably need to find a youth somewhere that wants to go hunting but no place to do it and take them out there for that spike. He/she would be very appreciative of it. And the feeling you get for extending the hunting tradition on to a youth is unbelievable. It's enough reward in itself and I promise you, you wouldn't regret doing it.

i agree with curtis post.

unless your in a large area or a co-op that can be managed, i would't waste a tag on him, better to let a young hunter take him

Sort of seems like you are shooting your self in the foot if you take him to manage herd and are in a one buck county.

Only if you are believer in the "Spikes Grow Up To Be Big Bucks Theory".

At what point in time, and how much breeding does a person allow a spike to stay in the herd, before they decide it ain't ever gonna be anything but a spike?

3.5-4.5-older?
