Selling animal hides
      #534140 - 10/01/08 09:33 PM

I am going on a hunt this coming weekend where there are supposed to be lots of yotes and bobcats.
Is it legal to sell the hides and if so do I need some sort of fur license?
I understand that the hides will be "fuller" in the winter but I was also curious what they go for and does anyone know where you can sell them in north TX?
Thanks for help!

Almost always there is a fur buyer at the Big varmint hunts. At times last year a I heard of some cats going 50-100 dollars. I heard there was even a market for coons and yotes last year. There was a buyer buying Cats for 25-45 at the sherman gander mountain tournament. The Graham tournament always has one or two.

You still need a trapper liscence to sell tho. B-rat made sure he had one incase we had anything a buyer wanted.

You can sell them all day long on taxidermy.net or ebay. You have to have a trappers lic. in the State of Tx? I know SOME other states you do but I didnt think you had to in texas if you shoot them.

For yotes, cats, and cougar you don't have to have the trapper lic. if you are hunting them, as they are not regulated as a fur bearer. For coons and such, you need the license. Just remember if you are selling cats to someone out of state (such as on e-bay), you have to have a CITIES tag attached to it (this is very important as without this tag, it classifies as a federal offense). You can get info about this tag from your local warden.

Hope this helps!

You have to have a trapper's license to be in pocession of a fur bearing animal. You can shot them all day long, but to process them you have to have the Trappers license.

On Yotes you need to check with county due to Rabbies quarantine, before you cross a county line with them.

Ladytaxi is correct on the Cities Tag if you sell out of state

you DONT have to have a trappers lic. I actually asked a warden this morning while at a little cafe by our lease.

A trapper's license is required to take or attempt to take fur-bearing animals, except that a person who possesses a hunting license may take and possess a fur-bearing animal, provided the furbearer (or any part thereof) is not to be sold.
A department-issued CITES tag is required to be attached to all otters taken and possessed in this state.
A landowner on their own land or their authorized agent is not required to have a trapper's or hunting license if these nuisance animals are taken while causing loss or damage to agricultural crops, livestock, poultry, or personal property. However, such animals or their pelts may not be possessed or sold.
Seasons, legal means of taking, and rules about fur-bearing animals or their pelts are covered in another guide (brochure) called Fur-bearing Animal Regulations. Fur-bearing animals may be hunted at night on private property with the aid of an artificial light.

Per TPWD

They won't be worth anything right now - it's been too hot. But definitely buy a trapper's lic and it's no problem to sell them.

Yotes and cats aren't considered fur-bearers though.

Some counties have private bounties on yotes. Ag Extension should be able to tell you. Mason was $50 a head last year.

Just to keep in mind, without a trappers license the bag limit on furebearers is 1 and possesion limit is 2.

But this time of year (like stated above) is NOT a good time for selling pelts, 98% of buyers probably WONT take them until they are in the winter fur. Very rarely will they take a pelt now unless its exceptionally rare look (albino, ect...).
