scope for varmint hunting at night
      #502248 - 08/29/08 05:48 PM

i've got a .222 that i need to put a scope on. What is a good scope for night time while using a spotlight? Thanks in advance.

I like scopes with an illuminated reticle for night hunting when seeing your crosshairs can be difficult. I'm using a Nikon Monarch X with black, red and green crosshairs. It's big and heavy but very good. I like the green reticle when using a red lens over the light.

Just make sure you have a good name brand scope. Most of your shots will be maxed at about 200 yards at night because of your light so a high power scope does you no good. the lower the scope setting the better you can see. Dont worry about cross hairs, I shoot fine crosshairs and have no problem. Another plus is either a 30mm tube or 50mm obj to let light in. illuminated reticle helps but is not a must but it is a plus. Just get good glass and you can see crystal clear at night. Nikon, Leupold, Burris all have things, now just go to SWFA.com and have a price war.

The lower the power the brighter the scope. Unless your shooting praire dogs I wouldn't get any thing over 10x. I don't care what anyone says, your not going to shot any yotes over a 100 yards at night, unless your using ten 10million powered spotlights. Even then you probly endup with a deer. Keep those shots short and MAKE 110% sure its a yote.

My advice is heavy cross hairs or lum at the losest power setting.

Hi,fisherboats you have more than just Academy. Look for Sharp Shooters and others in lubbock. And there is a gun show there this weekend. Thanks Clint.

I shoot 14x Illuminated Leupolds on my calling rifles. I dont know what the terrain looks like where you hunt but we shoot out past 100yds all the time. I leave my scopes set on 7-8x and turn them up if I need it.
