Any word on if the rechargable D size batteries are worth the buy for game cameras?

For almost the same money, you could get a 12v sealed gel battery and solar panel. Then you wouldn't hardly ever have to worry about it. If your camera uses 8 batteries, it's a 12v camera. 8 X 1.5volts = 12volts.
My Stealth Cam uses 8 C bats, and will be getting the sealed gel and solar panel opening day of Bow Season. I just set it up two weeks ago, and just put C's in it for now. But I ain't going to be buying alot of expensive batteries. And the rechargeables can get downright expensive too. There's also the consideration that your camera would be shut down while recharging them, unless you bought two sets of rechargeables.

If you get them make sure you get a solar trickle charger then they will always be charged.
